COMMUNITY DIG DAYS at Community Park/3 Parks

Digging graphic

March 12 and 13, 19 and 20

The Superior Bike Park is under construction at the Town's newest park facility, Community Park East/3 Parks, and we need your help to make this great new park feature a reality.  Check your schedule and plan now to get involved in your community to make this happen!  Over 4 days on the weekends of March 12-13 and 19-20, we hope to have more than 100 volunteers invest in our community to help construct the tracks and jumps for the Bike Park, all under the direction of nationally-known, locally-based bike park designer Lee McCormack.  (Click HERE to learn more about the overall project design and progress.)

If you have walked, jogged, biked, or driven down Rock Creek Parkway recently and noticed the mounds of dirt in the area between the Saddlebrooke and Horizons neighborhoods, this is where it will all happen.  That area has been cleared in preparation for volunteers (i.e., you, your family and neighbors) to construct the jumps and other mountain bike and BMX features which Lee has designed to make up 4 tracks - an advanced flow track and a pump track, and a beginner's flow track and pump track.  The amazing volunteers who help hand-shape the track will be the first to ride the finished product on March 20th.

The Town's Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Trails Advisory Committee (PROSTAC) and Town staff are reaching out to volunteer groups, sponsors and individuals who might be willing to participate.  We'll start at 9:00 a.m. each day and work through 5:00 p.m. with a break for lunch.  We'll have food, water, tools and restroom facilities available, so please come by and help for as long as you might be available.  Wear work clothes and bring gloves.  Tools to bring if you can: shovels, metal rakes, push brooms, hoes, tampers, wheel barrows or buckets.  Terrific raffle prizes will be given away each day.  You can just show up on those days, but if you have questions please contact Aaron Atwell (PROSTAC committee member, aaron.atwell@gmail.com, 303-638-2024), or the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department at 303-499-3675.  Remember, this project cannot happen without you - volunteer support has helped reduce the cost of the project, and can even enable the Town to add enhancements that otherwise would not be possible at this time.

NOTE FROM THE MAYOR

Mayor Andrew Muckle

Dear Residents,

This month I would like to update you about three transportation projects that are occurring in and around the Town of Superior.

The first project involves enhancements to US 36. The mayors along the US 36 corridor are working together to obtain funding to make improvements to the highway. In 2009, as part of the Federal Government's stimulus package, we received a grant of $10 million.  While this sounds like a significant amount of money, it does not go very far in terms of highway construction.

With the help of the Regional Transportation District, the Colorado Department of Transportation, and the Denver Regional Council of Governments have elected to use the grant to apply for a $300 million federally secured loan.  This money will be used to build two managed lanes in each direction on U.S. 36 from I-25 to Interlocken.  The managed lanes will be dedicated to bus-rapid-transit, carpools, and single occupant vehicles that would be tolled.  We submitted our loan application in February and should find out about our funding approval this summer.

The Town is continuing to work with the City of Louisville to make improvements to the McCaslin - US 36 interchange.  No decision has been made regarding a specific design and, in fact, multiple options are being explored.  We are hopeful, however, that construction will occur within two to three years.

You may also be aware of the Jefferson Parkway, a privately financed highway that may run along the Town's southern boundary.  I first wanted to thank all the residents who attended the Planning Commission meeting that was held on February 15th in regards to the Parkway.  I hope you found the presentation helpful.

This new proposed highway will create challenges for our community including increased cut-through traffic along McCaslin Boulevard and other local streets.  The Board of Trustees takes this issue very seriously. We are attempting to work with the Parkway Authority to find a solution that would minimize the negative consequences of the highway.  So far we have not been successful but we will continue to do whatever is possible to protect the Town's interests.

If you have any questions on any of these transportation items please don't hesitate to contact me or Town Hall at 303-499-3675.

Sincerely,

Andrew Muckle

CONGRATULATIONS!

PROSTAC Recognition

John Cracraft and Andy Wing received Proclamations from Mayor Muckle at the February 14 Town Board meeting.  The Proclamations recognized John and Andy for their years of service on the Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Trails Advisory Committee.  The Town truly appreciates their service to the residents of Superior through their commitment of personal time to serve on the Committee.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE ITEMS

Household Hazardous Waste includes chemicals used for maintaining lots of things around your home. These are all of the chemicals and electronics that eventually become unusable, dried-up or outdated. They often end up cluttering the garage and are easy to overlook. They include everything from stain for making your deck weather-resistant to leftover paint from your living room to used batteries, televisions and light bulbs. Other hazardous wastes would include leftover herbicides, pesticides, paint thinners and computers. It's a good rule of thumb that if the ingredients on the label are not in your everyday vocabulary, it's best not to throw in the trash or flush down the drain.

When all of these chemicals start to clutter your garage, the questions become what to do with them all and why bother? If you put the items in your trash, they will end up in a landfill and adversely affect the water supply as they leach out toxic or flammable chemicals. Don't fear though because there are options for disposing of these chemicals. The Town of Superior hosts an annual event to collect and properly dispose of them.  In addition, Boulder County has a drop-off facility opening soon to which you can bring your materials. As spring cleaning and house projects are just around the corner, consider the environment when using up chemicals and clearing out old electronics from your house.

CODE ENFORCEMENT CORNER

Each month, the Town includes information about issues and trends in the area of code enforcement.  During the month of February, 44 code violations were identified, primarily right-of-way obstructions such as basketball hoops, RV's, and trailers. Fourty of these were promptly corrected, resulting in an 90% compliance rate.

This month, we want to remind residents of the regulation concerning Public disturbance by animals.

Sec. 7-2-30.  Public disturbance by animals

(a)  It is unlawful for a person owning or keeping an animal to fail to prevent such animal from disturbing the peace of any other person by loud , persistent and habitual barking , howling , yelping , mewing or making any other loud , persistent and habitual noise , whether the animal is on or off the owners premises.

(b)  Provocation of the animal whose noise is complained of is a defense to any compliant brought hereunder.

Upon witness of graffiti related activity within the Town, please contact the Boulder County Sheriffs Department at 303-441-4444. To report a graffiti sighting/location please contact the Town of Superior at 303-499-3675.

Questions regarding the Town's code enforcement program should be directed to our Code Enforcement Officer at Town Hall, Reggie Nettles, at 303-499-3675 ext. 165, or reggien@townofsuperior.com.

Boulder County employers enjoy benefits of Eco Pass, Boulder County transit subsidy

In 2011, Boulder County will continue to provide businesses that purchase an Eco Pass (click HERE) for the first time with a 60% reimbursement.  Since Boulder County began offering the subsidy on Eco Passes to county employers, thirty county employers have offered Eco Passes as an employee benefit.  The Eco Pass is an amazing benefit for employees - it is an unlimited use, annual bus pass that can be used on any RTD local, regional, and express service, including call-n-Ride and skyRide to DIA.  Employees with an Eco Pass are nearly nine-times more likely to ride the bus than employees without one.

"Our employees greatly benefit from the Eco Pass, which provides access to alternative transportation for work commuting as well as recreational use," said Deanna Bratter, Responsible Livelihood Manager for WhiteWave Foods (click HERE).  "We are proud to offer every one of our Colorado based employees this incredible benefit."

"With an Eco Pass, employees can hop on the bus to go out to lunch and not only do they get back to the office quicker, they don't have the hassle and expense of parking," said Dawn Scriber from Picosecond Pulse Labs (click HERE).  "By offering an Eco Pass, not only are we promoting greener transportation, we're saving employees' money. The Eco Pass is one more tool in our benefits toolbox to retain great employees,"

If you are interested in learning how much you could save on an Eco Pass contract, please contact Catherine (36 Commuting Solutions) at catherine@36commutingsolutions.org or 303-604-4385 for a free estimate.
