Get Involved - Volunteer at Chili Fest

We need lots of volunteers at Chili Fest in various positions to pull off this huge event, including chili judges. If you or your community group are interested in volunteering for an hour or two at this year's Chili Fest, September 11th (and receiving a great event t-shirt for FREE), please contact Kristi or Dan Audette at 303-544-0359 or email to kristia@townofsuperior.com.

Take Alternative Transportation to Chili Fest

Due to limited parking around Community Park, and to help reduce the amount of waste associated with Town events, we ask that residents walk, bike or carpool to Chili Fest.  There will be overflow parking at the North Pool and Superior Elementary with shuttle service provided by YMCA of Boulder Valley for guests arriving from outside Superior.  There will be NO PARKING allowed at the Safeway shopping center, so please plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time!

Open Call for Future Football Stars!

Are you ready for some football...and chili?  Town staff is on a quest to find the best youth quarterback, punter and place-kicker in the area.  The NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Competition will once again be held during the Town's Chili Fest on September 11th.  The competition is open to boys and girls ages 6-15 and consists of one throw, punt, and kick off of a tee. Participants will be scored on distance and accuracy; so if your arm is a little more like Kyle Orton's (accurate inside 15-20 yards) than Brett Farve (throws a mile, but a lot of interceptions) you still have a great chance to win.  The winners of the local competition will have the opportunity to move on to the sectionals and possibly the finals!  This is a completely FREE community event, no fees are required.
All participants must register online by CLICKING HERE or submit the signed parental Entry/Release of Liability form to the on-site staff (link to PDF Form). Participants must also have a COPY of their birth certificate for age verification purposes at the event.

CHILI FEST SAMPLE TICKETS

Chili Tasting 09

To maximize value, convenience and reduce waste from selling tickets, Chili Fest-goers pay $5 for a chili-sampling bag with six heat-resistant compostable tasting cups and a spoon inside-families pay $10 and get two bags of cups and spoons to share.  This method allows us to avoid using up thousands of tickets for chili cooks to collect in exchange for individual chili tastes. Also included are FREE soft drinks, and unlimited restaurant chili samples.

Please note that we have very limited ability to provide change, so please, no large bills.  All money donated from ticket sales and beer goes directly to support the Boulder County Incident Management Team.  The BCIMT coordinates with all local public safety agencies to respond to large-scale emergencies throughout Boulder County, including floods, wildfires, hazardous material spills, blizzards, and other significant events. Thank you for supporting this great team of dedicated public safety professionals!

NOTE FROM THE MAYOR

Mayor Andrew Muckle

The 2010 school year has begun and once again the streets are occupied with children walking, riding, or taking the bus to school.  We as parents always want our children to be safe coming and going from school and I want to take this time to remind everyone of a few basic safety tips for driving around school areas:

First and foremost, set a good example by always following the traffic safety rules yourself. Children learn by example.

When a school bus is stopped at a bus stop picking up children please do not try to pass the school bus.  The school bus will have the stop sign out and flashing lights on to indicate that children are boarding or un-boarding.  There have been incidents when cars will go around the bus leading to potentially dangerous situations.  There may be a child coming around the corner of the bus where the driver cannot see the child.  It is imperative that all residents stop their vehicles and let the school bus let the children get on and off the bus and then pull away before moving their vehicles.

This goes without saying, but people still ignore the speed limit.  Please pay attention to the school zones where the speed limit is 20 mph.  There is a lot of foot traffic in the school zones and children may unpredictably leave the sidewalk.

Be sure to know where the drop-off and pick-up points are for your children at school.  This can reduce traffic congestion around the school.

Please remind your children of the following rules:

Always look both ways before crossing the street.

Cross in the crosswalks
at the corner, not in the middle of the block. Never cross from between parked cars, and never cross an intersection diagonally.

Children should look to see that drivers are aware of them. Making eye contact with a driver is a good way to know whether a driver is aware that someone is about to cross the road.
Cross quickly - do not linger or play in the street.
Stop at all stop signs, red lights, and obey traffic signals. When the intersection has crossing signals, only cross when the walk signal is lit.

When walking on sidewalks, be aware of driveways and alleys from which cars may pull out unexpectedly.

When walking down a street with no sidewalks, walk as near to the edge of the road as possible, facing traffic.

Physical barriers can also create safety issues for pedestrians on sidewalks in our neighborhoods. As a homeowner, please be considerate and keep sidewalks free of obstructions such as trash cans and recycle bins, toys and sports equipment, uncleared debris, leaves, ice and snow which can all cause safety concerns.

I hope the new school year for you and your children will be great, and please be safe around the schools for the sake of our children.

Sincerely,
Andrew Muckle
Mayor

SET IT & DON'T FORGET IT!

Irrigation

Irrigation season is winding down as long summer days get shorter and afternoon thunderstorms bring more rain.  Is your sprinkler system still in "set it and forget it" mode?  NOW is the time to revisit the control box and to re-evaluate your watering times and frequency.  Remember these recommended practices for conserving water while maintaining a healthy lawn:

CHECK your sprinkler timers to avoid excessive application.  And, check how sprinkler heads are aimed to avoid overspray onto sidewalks and streets.

AVOID watering between the hours of 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, when evaporation rates are highest.

Some zones may require less water than others, depending on soil conditions, sun exposure and type of sprinkler head (stationary or rotating).  ADJUST settings to address each zone's microclimate.

TRY "cycle & soak watering".  Due to the clay-content of local soils, water is not easily absorbed.  The cycle & soak method can be an efficient irrigation strategy.  Water 3 times for 4 minutes each time, with an hour between waterings...more moisture will be absorbed than if you watered for 12 continuous minutes.

For more tips on conserving water outdoors, please visit the Center for Resource Conservation website by CLICKING HERE.

CODE ENFORCEMENT CORNER

Each month, the Town includes information about issues and trends in the area of code enforcement.  During the month of August, 40 code violations were identified, primarily right-of-way obstructions such as basketball hoops, RV's, and trailers. Thirty-seven of these were promptly corrected, resulting in a 92.5% compliance rate.

This month, we want to remind residents of two regulations, one concerning Animal Feces and the other concerning the use of Town open space.

Sec. 7-2-70.  Animal feces
(a)    It is unlawful for a property owner to allow excessive animal feces to accumulate on property.  The accumulation of animal feces shall be deemed to be excessive if there is sufficient quantity to generate odors off the property.
(b)    It is unlawful for an animal owner to fail to remove from any public or private property feces deposited by such animal.

Sec. 11-4-10. Use of Town open space
(a)    It is unlawful to access properties by, over or through open space and parks owned or maintained by the Town for the purpose of construction, the transport of any materials, landscaping or any other purpose associated with the improvement or maintenance of properties adjacent to or near Town open space and parks with-out first obtaining a permit from the Town Manager.
(b)    It is unlawful to install, build, maintain or otherwise possess a gate between open space or parks maintained by the Town and adjacent properties without first obtaining a revocable gate permit from the Town Manager. The application for such permit shall be on forms provided by the Town. There is no fee for an open space gate permit. The permit may be revoked by the Town Manager for violations of this Code or terms of the permit.
(c)    It is unlawful to dump, deposit or otherwise place any material, including litter, landscape material, grass clippings or any other yard waste, on Town-owned open space.
(d)    It is unlawful to plant any vegetation on Town-owned open space.

Questions regarding the Town's code enforcement program should be directed to our Code Enforcement Officer, Reggie Nettles, at 303-499-3675, ext. 140 or reggien@townofsuperior.com.

NEW LOCATION FOR SHERIFF SUBSTATION

In September, the Boulder County Sheriff substation for the Town of Superior will be moving from its current location at Rocky Mountain Fire Station #5.   The new location of the substation will be located within Superior Marketplace at 405 Center Drive Suite F, which is west of IHOP.  This move will provide a substantially larger space for the Sheriff substation at no cost to the Town.  It will also allow for high visibility and access to the public.

All phone numbers will remain the same and there should be no interruption or change of services while the move is taking place.  The non-emergency line is 303-441-4444  and the general substation phone numbers are 720-564-2696 and 720-564-2698.  The direct office number for Sergeant Jim Chamberlin is 720-564-2697.

AT THE FIREHOUSE

RMF ambulance

School is back in session and Fire Prevention Week for 2010 is October 3-9.  This year we will once again be meeting with students by grade level or individual classrooms as teachers find space in their curriculums around and during Fire Prevention Week.   Our focus over the last two years has been to develop a curriculum for each grade that builds new skills yearly or refreshes new ones introduced the year before and adds on.  We are also building new lesson plans each year so that materials stay fresh and new ideas can be incorporated often or throughout the year as part of teaching curriculums.  This year our overall theme which appears on the take home item we provide to each student we see is "Be Cool, Be Fire Safe".
We are grateful to the educational community for welcoming us into the schools to present fire safety as teaching prevention is just as important as suppression and medical care in the life of a firefighter.  Without these great opportunities we would most likely see more building fires and increased injury to our youngest citizens, children.

We would like to thank Superior residents for their patience as we worked out the bugs with construction and firefighter traffic in front of the Indiana Street Station the first week of school; and apologize for the confusion and difficulties.  The sidewalk is open in front of the station, though we ask that bicyclists dismount and walk their bicycles up the sidewalk rather than ride in the bike lane as visibility of construction traffic onto and off the site is tough.  In addition if you will please remind your students as they walk to and from school to watch carefully for construction material delivery trucks coming and going from the site or even better cross the street at Coalton Rd. to the north or at west Torrey's Peak or Mount Sopris to the south to avoid the west side of the street in front of the station entirely.  We once again thank you for your patience during this time of construction.  We look forward to hosting you in your new station after the first of the New Year.
