YMCA "Mini" Programs A Great Place to Start

|
Fall is right around the corner and that means that parks and fields will soon be filled with kids playing soccer, football, lacrosse and baseball. They will meet new teammates and coaches and look forward to scoring their first goal. These are a few of the best things about youth sports - being active, learning and improving a sport, and making new friends.
Our "Mini" programs encompass those aspects of the YMCA youth sports programs at the 3 year old level. The program encourages parent participation while their child is introduced to the sport of soccer, baseball, football or basketball. Through all the aspects of the program parents are able to spend some one-on-one time with their child while they both learn, grow and having fun as a team.

COOKS AND VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

2010 CHILI FEST Saturday, September 11th 3-7 p.m. at Community Park
Come join in the celebration that is sure to be hot, hot, hot! The 10th annual Chili Fest will be September 11th from 3:00-7:00 p.m. at Community Park. This event is sure to be better than ever with returning favorites- Colorado Legends, The Hazel Miller Band and Chicago Blues by the Delta Sonics. This family-friendly event will have a variety of activities including chili tasting, bouncers, craft and business vendors, the NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass and Kick competition and much more. This year's event will again include a "People's Choice" Restaurant Competition. There will be more chili to taste, but be sure to come early to ensure the best selection. The competition is open to everyone who is interested. For those who would like to compete in the International Chili Society sanctioned Regional cook-off or the restaurant competition, please visit townofsuperior.com or call 303-544-0359 for an application and contest rules. As with all the Town's events, the Chili Fest will be a Zero Waste event. This means there are no trash cans at the event and we try to compost or recycle as much of the trash generated as possible. With assistance from the Recycling and Conservation Advisory Committee, the Town was able to either compost or recycle more than 85% of the materials from the 4th of July. We hope to make the Chili Fest even better. Please look for containers placed throughout the event and follow instructions on the signage. We need lots of hands to make an event this huge work and we would love to have your help! If you are interested in volunteering for this year's Chili Fest as a judge or in a general capacity, or if you would like information on becoming a cook, please contact Kristi Audette at 303-544-0359 or kristia@townofsuperior.com.

NOTE FROM THE MAYOR

|
In this November's general election, there will
appear three items on the ballot that could have major impacts on governments,
special districts, and schools. These 3
ballot initiatives, if passed, will reduce property tax, vehicle tax and fees,
income tax, telecommunication tax/fees, and ability for government to issue
debt. I encourage each resident to get
familiar with each ballot initiative and see how they might affect you and your
local governments and schools. Click HERE for
the ballot question language of each initiative and its respective estimated
financial impacts. No matter how you feel about these issues I encourage every resident to go out and vote on November 2nd.
Sincerely, Andrew
Muckle

Superior Town Board Approves Phase 2
of Alternative Energy Solar Improvements
In 2008, the Town Board
adopted an aggressive goal to become energy self-sufficient (later defined as
producing more energy than we consume) within a decade. Immediately, the Town undertook a number of
energy conservation measures, which collectively, have reduced the Town's consumption
by approximately 20 percent. In early 2009, the Town installed five rooftop photovoltaic
(PV) solar installations at Town Hall, the annex, the two pools and Coal Creek
fire station. These five units produce
more than 56,000 kW hours of electricity - representing more than 25 percent of
the electrical consumption in these facilities. This month, the Town Board
approved contracts to purchase and install two large (97kW), ground-mounted PV
solar installations - to be installed at Town's water and wastewater treatment
plants - at a total cost of $798,860. These systems will produce more than 280,000 kWh of electricity, which
represents more than 8 percent of the Town's total electrical consumption. The Town will be financing this purchase through an
innovative lease agreement with Key Equipment Finance of Superior. Taking advantage of utility rebates and
federal tax incentive, the Town will own this equipment after five years at a
total cost of $193,620 - or less than 25 percent of its original cost. Furthermore, the Town will reduce its utility
bill by more than $14,000 annually; and will receive renewable energy credits
(REC payments) from Xcel Energy in the amount of $22,800 annually. In total, the Town's investment will produce
an immediate and perpetually positive cash flow, estimated in excess of
$500,000, over the anticipated 25 year life of these solar panels. In the very near future, the Town of Superior anticipates making similar investments in alternative
energy production which will accomplish the Board's original goal - and make Superior the first energy neutral community in the country.

IN THE CONE ZONE

| |
In addition
to the reconstruction of Indiana Street
between Eldorado Drive and Coalton Road that is currently underway, street
improvements will soon begin in North
Original Town. All streets north of the Coal Creek
creek bed, south of Sycamore Street, and west of McCaslin Boulevard, (excluding
Coal Creek Drive) will see milling and overlay, concrete repairs, and minor
drainage improvements. There will be NO full street closures during the project,
although access to these streets may be somewhat limited during periods of active
construction. At no time will residents
be restricted from their properties. Residents directly impacted will be kept apprised of any changes as the
work progresses. As
always, we understand the inconvenience that these projects pose and we
appreciate your patience. Please use
caution when traveling in these areas, for your own safety as well as the
safety of our staff & contractors.

Each month, the Town includes information about issues and
trends in the area of code enforcement.
