Welcome New Sponsor Poly GelŪLaunches ThermoActive™ Cold & Hot Mobile Compression Therapy Supports

Whippany, NJ, January 1, 2010.

ThermoActive™ is a ground-breaking line of cold and hot compression therapy supports that utilizes the latest technology and innovations to treat new and chronic injuries. The patented technology provides circumferential compression in conjunction with cooling or heating therapy.  Each support features 3 components:

1)    An anatomical wrap with easy to adjust hook and loop.
2)    A patented removable gel pack that can either be frozen or heated depending on the use.
3)    A unique, easy-to-use hand held pump that adjusts the level of compression.

The ability to apply circumferential compression allows ThermoActive™ to provide certain benefits that others cannot, including:
1)    Deep tissue treatment - others do not apply enough pressure to achieve this.
2)    Anatomically correct fitting - the pumping action helps the support conform to the shape of the body, providing a better and more effective treatment.
3)    Mobility- the support will stay in place even if you are walking or doing light activity.
4)    Faster recovery from injuries

In addition to being a high quality product for the patient, ThermoActive™ also provides other benefits to a professional's practice including:
1)    Less down time allows more patients to be seen.
2)    Priced right for either in-office use or to re-sell to patients.
3)    Mobility and simultaneous treatments can be achieved.
4)    No electricity needed for compression.
5)    Gel pack can be heated in a Hydrocollator™(trademark of Chattanooga Group, Inc.) or microwave and chilled in a refrigerator, freezer, or ice chest.
For more information on ThermoActive™ or the complete line of Poly GelŪ innovations, please call 866-438-2297 or visit www.thermoactive.net or www.polygel.com

Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA)

Interesting Take for Those Dealing with Collegiate and Professional Athletes

GINA provides that health care plans cannot require a plan participant to undergo a genetic test to be eligible for coverage under a health care plan. Health care plans, whether insured or self-insured, group or individual plans, cannot prevent an individual's eligibility to enroll in the plan or adjust premium or contribution rates based on an individual or family member's genetic information. The Act provides that any reference to genetic information concerning an individual or family member includes genetic information of (a) a fetus carried by a pregnant woman; and (b) an embryo legally held by an individual or family member utilizing assisted reproductive technology.

This particular instance led to questions about the validation of MLB players' age status which has been questioned in recent years.  Nevertheless, GINA provides an exception for health care treatment in that a patient may undergo a genetic test or be advised on the provision of a genetic test or services through a wellness program and not run afoul of the law. With respect to federal medical privacy laws, GINA specifically amends the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) by adding the category of genetic information to the list of health-related information that is "protected health information" under HIPAA.

Do Genes Predispose Us To Injury?
Include articles on topics of interest to your readers, relevant news and events. If you find an interesting article on the Web, you can easily ask the author's permission to summarize the article and link to it from your newsletter. Inserting a link in your article lets you track which topics attract the most interest.

We are now seeing that certain gene profiles correlate with weakened or compromised connective tissue.  These patients often have increased incidence of soft tissue injury.  A review of the current literature suggests certain genes are correlated with improved physical performance.
Some reports suggest an association between lumbar disc diseases and isolated gene as identified in Japanese collegiate judo athletes.  All this science is reported in the October 15, 2009 issue of ESPN The Magazine as an editorial report of the science available today to the Sports Medicine community.  There certainly exists the possibility of identifying certain gene types with a propensity for increased incidence to injury.

Testimony from University of Missouri Athletic Trainer Regarding Cleaning Protocols for Wrestling Mat

Mizzou Wrestling Cleaning Protocols:
  1. Wrestling mats are cleaned daily with CSG SportsClean disinfectant. Spray or mop on.
  2. Mats are treated once every 3 months with CSG SportsAide XL for 24/7 protection against a wide array of bacteria. After disinfecting mats, spray on SportsAide XL and let application dry.
  3. Wrestling shoe lockers are located directly outside wrestling room. Wrestlers are not permitted to wear shoes into locker rooms, bathrooms, etc.
  4. A 3'x4' mat tray is kept at the entrance to the wrestling room and filled with CSG SportsClean disinfectant. All coaches and athletes entering room must walk through the solution to further ensure they do not track bacteria or fungi onto wrestling mats. Cleaner is replaced daily.
  5. Once a week all equipment and personal gear are cleaned with CSG's SportsClean disinfectant.
  6. One a week all weight lifting equipment, benches, barbells, exercise machines, chairs, tables, couches and personal equipment (e.g. head gear, wrestling shoes, sneakers) are cleaned with CSG SportsClean disinfectant.
  7. All equipment and personal gear is treated every 3 months with CSG SportsAide XL for 24/7 protection. Spray on and let dry. All wrestlers participate in cleaning process.
  8. Our laundry is washed in CSG FabricAide once a month, to incorporate long-lasting antimicrobial protection on all workout gear, uniforms, and gym bags. (MRSA, staph, and fungi can survive in fabrics for months).
  9. All wrestlers dress and shower in our locker room.
  10. Each wrestler is given a 16 oz. bottle of Hibiclens antimicrobial skin wash to use in shower and Hibistat towelettes are used for away matches and tournaments.
  11. Skin checks are performed before each practice by the medical staff and/or trained personnel.

This protocol has generated the following results:
  • Reduced new skin infections by almost 98%
  • Significantly lowered the risk of infection from dangerous organisms transferred back from tournaments
  • Saved more than $3,500 over previous year medication costs for treating skin infections
"CSG offers a great product. If a school can follow this protocol day in and day out, I expect they will see very similar results"

Shane Bishop, University of Missouri Assistant Athletic Trainer
