Rollerskiing Substitutes
Would LOVE to know any reasonable training substitute for roller skis? indoor machines? equipment that reasonably simulates the muscle requirements of roller skiing? As I have a skin condition that can-not handle risk the possibility of road rash from a crash.
There are some good substitutes for rollerskiing that you should put into your weekly routine. The main thing they should accomplish are increasing upperbody specific strength, technique/coordination and full body aerobic conditioning.
I would recommend: Getting a machine like the advanced Concept 2 Ski Erg (a SkiPost sponsor that provides discounts to Ski Club members) or at least creating a homemade rollerboard (see below) as well as hill bounding, hill walking and trail running with poles that we have featured in previous SkiPost articles May May 17 June 7

Heart Rate Monitors
Hello SkiPost,
I would like to purchase a heart rate monitor to use for training and racing. I have looked on line and there are so many models with many bells and whistles to choose from.
For a female elite marathon racer, what HRM would you suggest? If not a specific brand, then what features are must haves? I would like to keep it simple so I will actually use it. I have had a monitor in past but quit using it, also had trouble with strap connection reading my heart rate.
Below are what the specialists at Suunto have to say. But personally give me, Pace, distance and Heart Rate and I am ready to go.

For a marathon racer I would recommend a look at the Suunto Quest Run Pack. It has running specific features like running cadence, and because it gets speed and distance from an included foot pod instead of GPS, you can make it through hundreds of hours of speed and distance use before any batteries need to be replaced. This also means no recharging. It is slim and light and won't look bulky or out of place on a lady's wrist. You can find out more about the Quest and the rest of our training line at: suunto.com, Suunto Quest Runner's Pack

Specific Strength Workouts?
I'm glad to hear that you're hitting up the weight room as a holistic approach to your ski training and general fitness base! Personally, I love weight workouts and think that time spent in the gym is an integral part of injury prevention and optimizing your capabilities as an endurance athlete! I know it adds diversity to my training week and I have no doubt that doing strength work allows my body to handle a higher load of training!
At APU we generally start the new strength training year by building a general level of base fitness strength. While you're right that ski specific exercises are important for skiers, I think it's more important to tackle the larger muscle groups first and then get more ski specific as the summer progresses and fall approaches. For example.... read Holly's complete June 14 article here
