Birkie "Founder" Dave Landgraf
Killed in Car Bicycle Accident
David Landgraf, 62, of Bloomer, Wis. one of the Birkebeiner "Founder" skiers, died Monday, Aug. 8, of injuries sustained when his bicycle was hit by a motorist on Highway 27 north of Sand Lake, Wis. last Friday evening. Landgraf succumbed to his injuries and passed away at 1:12 p.m. on Monday.
Landgraf, retired from teaching physical education at Bloomer Middle School helped coach dozens of youngsters and adults over four decades of Nordic skiing. Landgraf was one of just 35 people to take the start line in Hayward for the inaugural Birkie, and he continued to post exemplary results even as he crossed into the 60-plus age group.
In the 2011 Birkie, Landgraf finished in 2 hours, 43 minutes, finishing second place in his age group and 468th overall.
The Nordic skiing community of northwest Wisconsin mourns the loss of Landgraf, a much admired and respected athlete and individual. The youngest of an elite corps of 10 skiers who after skiing the first 10 American Birkebeiner ski marathons, were dubbed as "Founders" by the event's creator Tony Wise. Given his passion for the race and the sport and his own physical capabilities, it is likely that Landgraf would have continued skiing the Birkie to log more than 40 or perhaps even 50 consecutive events.
