Kuzzy and Gregg Give Back

 Kuzzy Kids Group shot

The Yellowstone Ski Festival means many things to many people. The five-day cross-country ski festival can be a time to brush off the storage wax and ski for the first time each season. It can be a chance for professional racers to earn valuable points towards the World Cup. It can be an opportunity to demo new gear before the holiday season. It can be a new Thanksgiving tradition for you and yours. The Yellowstone Ski Festival is all of this and more.

The essence of the Yellowstone Ski Festival was visible on the trails this past Saturday. On the last day of the official festival, most competitive skiers had just completed three days of intense races. By late afternoon, many teams were hurrying out of town before the next storm. However, two professional athletes and incredible young men donated their time and energy to the first ever Kuzzy Kids Clinic in West Yellowstone sponsored by the SISU skiers of St. Paul, MN.

Garrott Kuzzy and Brian Gregg are professional cross-country ski racers. Kuzzy was a member of the 2010 US Olympic Team and both are part of the elite CXC racing team. They led 30 kids from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana, Wyoming, Great Britain, and Utah through 90 minutes of pure fun on skis. Kuzzy and Gregg divided the 6 to 12 years olds and taught them to warm up, run drills, ski backwards, and how to pose on the podium.

At the end of the clinic there were beaming faces, laughter, and a group shot. Kuzzy and Gregg addressed the young skiers on bended knee. They explained that no U.S cross-country skier has ever earned an Olympic gold medal. Kuzzy leaned in and said, "You know, I think one of you just might be the first." Kids roared and their parents choked back tears. In that moment, the true meaning of the Yellowstone Ski Festival was evident to all. Olympians and rank beginners can share the same snow and leave with a lifetime of inspiration.

Swix's Simple Secrets to Success Starts in West Yellowstone

Chris Hall, director of US Racing Services for Swix states, "Waxing for the West Yellowstone USSA SuperTour events was straightforward but not West Yellowstone normal. As we do for each race we tested a matrix of CH, LF, and HF base gliders based on temp and humidity. Once we had chosen the base wax we re-waxed and zeroed the test skis with the chosen base and tested if Cera-F over-layers increased the speed.  A final test determined structure. For the first two races we could not conduct speed trap tests or run outs because the snow was too deep and tracks inconsistent so we conducted double blind feel tests on matched and zeros test skis. For the final event we were able to conduct run out and blind feel tests for glide as well as testing kick wax on Saturday's Classic race."

Testing each day proved, what coaches using just the Swix wax charts suggested, that CH4 or LF4 should be the base wax for most. FC78 SuperCera was the call as a final layer on 2 out of the 3 days. This was surprising to some as we were in "cold and dry West Yellowstone where Cera-F does not run well". But this visit to West did not produce clear bluebird skies, but rather low hanging high-humidity clouds. A hand pressed .3mm broken-V structure improved most cold skis glide, further enforcing the argument that moisture management was important even though we were in West. Detailed Glide and Kick recommendations can be seen at swixracing.us

What were the Secrets to Success in West? - Keeping it simple by looking at Snow Crystal Structure, Temp and Humidity and not trying to win the race in the wax room with some a complex mixture of waxes.

APU's Eric Flora states "Since its inception over a decade ago we have developed and implemented a stringent wax testing and wax application procedure that allows us to deliver consistently fast skis. The key is to keep it simple. At APU we focus on one line of wax. This process produces very good to great skis each race day and provides the athletes the confidence they need to produce the quality results they have trained for. Using the complete Swix line allows us to understand exactly where temperature and humidity fit into the complete Swix waxing matrix and gives me the confidence that I will deliver top skis to my athletes."  APU has 4 women in top 6 and 5 men in the top 10 of USSA SuperTour with a waxing process that relies on simplicity of the comprehensive Swix waxing matrix.

Fischer skis with Eco Friendly and Lightweight Basalt Core

Fischer Skis announced today it has launched the first Nordic skis with a natural basalt core for remarkable effects on ski weight and performance.  Available on four ski models, Fischer's new Air Core Basalight technology significantly reduces weight to deliver a superior cross country skiing experience.Furthermore, replacing conventional fiberglass with volcanic basalt fibers supports the environment.

By replacing fiberglass with basalt, Fischer brings the weight of the skis close to the more expensive carbon fiber skis. The CRS Skating Vasa is now 70 grams lighter than its fiberglass-core predecessor. Fischer's move to replace a manufactured laminate with the natural fibers made from volcanic rock underscores the company's commitment to the environment. Using basalt eliminates the chemical-intense process involved in creating fiberglass as well as its harmful byproducts. Fischer is the first and only ski producer in the world to rely on 100 percent renewable energy and employs advanced environmental protection procedures company-wide. More information on Fischer's ecological approach is available at fischerskis.com/en/eco_page.php

Nordic Torpedo - Glide Wax Testing Tool -

Waxing Torpedo you tube Video

High-tech approaches in waxing are becoming increasingly important in cross country races, helping the whole competition to become more professional. 100ths of a second now can decide who wins and who loses in the sprint races. Waxing has become a very complex process which involves a lot of time, manpower and money. Throughout the wax testing, various parameters such as: snow and air temperature, humidity, wind and sunshine will make a difference.

Today, performing a good wax testing job requires a quiver of perfectly matched 6-8 pairs of skis, an expensive speed trap system, good amount of different wax brands and again a lot of time. That is the reason CXC Team Vertical Limit has been working on this product to have an efficient, accurate and inexpensive way to get the fastest skis for athletes to win. This is how we test waxes from now on!
torpedo
1. It takes 20-30 min to apply and test 8 different waxes with Nordic Torpedo and it takes 1-1.5 hour to test wax with 8 pairs of skis
2. It takes 12 times less wax to apply on 1 side of Nordic Torpedo than on 1 pair of skis
3. Nordic Torpedo is as accurate as testing a quiver of testing skis for all waxes including pure fluoro and liquids
4. Nordic Torpedo reliability has been proven through testing at National Elite Level competitions since November 2009
