What I'm Tasting

Master of Malt Glenfarclas Movember Edition
(53% ABV)

Each year, the "Movember" campaign helps raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer worldwide. Master of Malt and Glenfarclas have teamed up to release this limited-edition 9-year-old bottling, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Movember campaign. The nose has notes of roasted almonds, caramel candy, honey, allspice, and toasted oak. The taste is dry and intense with notes of caramel cola, allspice, honey, and a touch of raisins. The finish is short and dry with caramel cola and a hint of spices.
 88 points.

Kilchoman 100% Islay
(50
% ABV)

This expression uses barley grown on the farm where Kilchoman is located, and malted on-site at the distillery. The nose has a good phenolic peatiness, heather and gorse, and hints of dried grass and honey. The taste has a good mix of peat and wood smoke with a hint of citrus underneath and touches of allspice, honey, and black tea. The finish is smoky and lingering.

91 points.

Evan Williams 2002 Single Barrel

(43.3% ABV)

The annual single barrel edition of Evan Williams will be reaching stores soon. This year's version has a complex nose with notes of toasted oak, smoke, vanilla, cocoa, and hints of pipe tobacco and leather.  The taste is rich and spicy with classic Bourbon notes of caramel, cocoa, vanilla, and hints of maple syrup and cinnamon. The finish is medium-length and sweet with caramel syrup and brown sugar.

89 points.

HARVEST TIME IS WHISKEY TIME

A few weeks ago, I was driving through Central Ohio heading home after a visit to Woodford Reserve. While I was driving, the farmers were working their fields and harvesting their crops for the fall. The sight of combines in the fields and the dust trails in the wind reminded me of growing up around the corn fields in Indiana.

I didn't realize it back then, but a healthy amount of that corn was bound for the distilleries in Kentucky and Southern Indiana to be turned into Bourbon. Perhaps if I'd known then that I would wind up writing and talking about whiskey, I would have seen things differently (and perhaps paid more attention in chemistry class as well).  Farming is a tough way to make a living, and here's hoping the farmers had a good harvest. Now, it's time for the distillers to take their grain and turn it into the whiskey we'll be sipping in a few years.

Slainte!

WHISKY ART FOR THE HOLIDAYS...AND MORE

If you're looking for a special gift for a fellow whisky lover, or just for you, please consider the limited-edition prints available in the WhiskyCast Photo Gallery. Photography was my passion long before I discovered whisky, and I've been able to create some memorable images during my travels. This panoramic view of The Glenlivet's stillhouse is just one of those images, and is available as a 10" X 36" print suitable for display in a whisky room, office, or bar. Other prints are available in color or black and white, and orders received by December 7 can be delivered in time for Christmas.

If you're planning to shop at Amazon.com, please consider entering through the Store links at the WhiskyCast web site. You'll find a full range of whisky books, glassware, and other gifts in the WhiskyCast Store.
