Chocolate is a Powerful Health Food - Study from Cornell University
But Heed This Warning - A bit of good news if you received a gift of chocolate this Valentine's Day: For once, something that tastes good is good for you. Chocolate "teems with antioxidants that prevent cancer," according to a Cornell University study published in 2003. And the results of an animal study -- just published in December, 2011- show that eating cocoa, the raw material in chocolate, can help prevent cancerous lesions in the colon. Does this give us a license to load up on candy bars, brownies, hot chocolate and (my favorite) Black Forest cake? Let's find out. . .
The Cornell study was entitled "Cocoa has More Phenolic Phytochemicals and a Higher Antioxidant Capacity than Teas and Red Wine." That's a quite a discovery! "If I had made a prediction before conducting the tests, I would have picked green tea as having the most antioxidant activity," said one of the researchers, Chang Y. Lee. "When we compared one serving of each beverage, the cocoa turned out to be the highest in antioxidant activity, and that was surprising to me." He added that as recently as 1993, food scientists did not know that phenolics had an important role in human health. Phenolics or polyphenols are substances found in many plants that are good for your health. They tend to be associated with aromas and flavors - and rich in antioxidant power. The tannins in red wine, for example, are phenolics.
The Cornell comparison of cocoa to green tea and red wine produced startling results. Cocoa turned out to be about twice as rich in beneficial substances as red wine and three times as rich as green tea. Professor Joe Vinton of the University of Scranton says the darker the chocolate is, the better it is for you. Ounce for ounce, milk chocolate has twice as many antioxidants as blueberries, but dark chocolate has five times as many. But the antioxidant power of cocoa powder is even higher - twice that of dark chocolate. Eat it off the tree, or as close to that as you can get The industrial processes that turn cocoa into chocolate reduce its antioxidant properties. The less processed the chocolate, the better it is for your health. Cocoa is harvested from a plant called "cacao," derived from an Aztec word. This is an evergreen tropical American tree that bears a leathery fruit on the trunk and older branches.
Cocoa powder - the pure stuff - is made from cacao seeds that have been fermented, roasted, shelled, ground, and freed of most of their fat. Most of the polyphenols do survive being heated. Besides antioxidants, cocoa contains a wealth of other substances that can do you good, including 400 different compounds that promote a better mood and relieve anxiety. Most chocolate fans don't need to be told the stuff gives you a lift. And now the scientific proof is in. Who needs Paxil and Prozac? Chocolate and cancer prevention. A new study from Spain's Institute of Food Science and Technology (ICTAN) supports the idea that eating cocoa powder can help prevent cancer - or at least colon cancer.2 In the study, rats were fed a diet consisting of 12 percent cocoa while a control group was not fed cocoa. The animals were then given a chemical known to cause cancer lesions in the colon wall. The rats fed a cocoa-rich diet developed fewer lesions than the control group. The researchers also found an improvement in the antioxidant defenses of the cocoa-fed animals and a decrease in indications of oxidative damage (damage caused by free radicals). The researchers believe that cocoa helps protect from cancer by interrupting cell-signaling pathways involved in cancer cell proliferation, and also by inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death). Apparently the cancer-fighting substances in cocoa are not absorbed well in the small intestine. That's enables them to find their way into the large intestine - the colon - with their antioxidant powers intact. Chocolate yes, sugar no Although there's strong support for the antioxidant value of unprocessed cocoa powder, most of the health benefits are negated by making it into chocolate -- mixing it with gobs of sugar and saturated fat. It's a wash, at best. There are some chocolate companies that sell dark chocolate candy that supposedly contains a full, rich dose of antioxidants. Check the labels for sugar content. When I was a child, my older sister and I had hot chocolate every morning for breakfast. (Those were the days). My sister made hers with unsweetened Hershey's cocoa powder, while I made mine with sugar-loaded Nestle's Quik. My sister had the right idea, although she added her own sugar and probably ended up with a drink as sweet as mine. If you can restrain your shaking, addicted hand from reaching for the sugar jar, a drink made from unsweetened cocoa powder can give you a wealth of health benefits. In fact, it's fair to call it a "super food." If you've eaten mole poblano - chicken with chocolate sauce -- at a Mexican restaurant, you've encountered unsweetened chocolate - and, yes, it does taste good.

In The Spotlight After 23 years of senior corporate leadership and growing tired of the demanding travel schedule, it was time for a change. While I would miss my international business family that I had come to enjoy, I knew I would not miss the stress that came with the world of mergers, acquisition and outsourcing. I was going to finally balance my life, or so I thought, through establishing my own consulting practice based in Canada. It quickly became apparent that being in the transformational business for yourself meant long hours and tedious commutes into the core of the city where the offices of the large corporate clients were. So why, after 8 years and a successful consulting business, was I still so exhausted? I had traded airports for long commutes, sometimes taking me in excess of 2 hours one way. The business was doing very well but I was growing increasingly frustrated at my inability to find time to enjoy my family and the fruits of my labor. During this time, I was introduced to MXI and while I bought in as any smart business person would do to get a piece of this multi-billion dollar industry, I was really just treating it as a hobby since my existing business was draining my days. What I did realize was without the consumption of this chocolate, I could not have maintained the hours. Getting up at 4:30 am only to arrive home anywhere between 10:00-11:00 pm and to do it again, day after day. I found the time to read Paula Pritchard's book 'Owning Yourself' and that was the turning point. It seemed every page was focused on me! Simply put, I was trading time for money.
I made a decision at that point to decrease my existing business hours and dedicate real time to MXI as I saw people making a lucrative income AND enjoying the freedom with their friends and family. I WANTED that and knew MXI had the integrity and reputation of a company I would be proud to be aligned with.
I am working hard to build a large international distribution with emotionally intelligent people! Best part is I have traded more of my commutes for time focused on helping people who will benefit from our products and lifestyle. I am back in a regular routine at the gym, spending time with my four horses, golfing, skiing or snowboarding when the white stuff avails itself. The respectful culture, compassion and support from the MXI Leadership tops any I have experienced in the corporate world and makes me wonder what took me so long! Thank you MXI. IN THE SPOTLIGHT!!
FIRST GOLD EXECUTIVE IN THE NETHERLANDS Gea Schepers!!
SECOND GOLD EXECUTIVE IN THE NETHERLANDS Hans Schokker!!

CONGRATULATIONS
Gea Schepers & Hans Schokker
In The Spotlight!!
I am Gea Schepers, 46 years old, mother of 2 kids (my son is 14 and my daughter is 12), and I live in the Netherlands. When I started with Xoçai a few years ago, I suffered from fibromyalgia for about 20 years. I always had a lot of pain in my muscles and joints and always felt exhausted. In 2005 a friend told me to have a diet of unprocessed, alkalizing food and that advice helped me a lot! On my journey to a healthier living I read a lot about healthfood. In 2007 my attention was drawn by the website of Burrell Cross about healthy chocolate. As a chocoholic I immediately was enthusiastic. I signed up as an Associate before I even tasted Xoçai . Burrell told me that Europe soon would open. Until then he would ship the boxes to me in the Netherlands so I could enjoy my chocolate. After a few months I even felt better and after more months I had no symptoms of fibromyalgia at all! I had no pain anymore and I got more and more energy. I am now free of symptoms and I feel like a completely different person!
In January 2009 MXI opened a warehouse in Venlo. I was so excited that we finally had a warehouse and I became active with Xoçai and started building a team. In November 2009 I met my business partner Hans Schokker. He inspires me and is such a good friend to work with. Together we built a team of almost 200 distributors and customers. We're doing a lot of opportunity meetings, chocolate tastings, training calls, newsletters, advertisements and fairs.
Last December I was on the Caribbean cruise (a fantastic and unforgettable experience). And last week I became Gold Executive with the new Team Elite Program! We helped 3 people to get to Bronze: Hilde Bastiaens, Hans Schokker and ChocOkay. We placed the volume of the Bronzes (and more) in the downline of Hans. This way Hans became Gold Executive at the same time, based on volume (a genius plan of Hans)! 14 people became Executive Team Elite and we enrolled more than 35 new Business Builders. My next goal will be the Caribbean cruise in December with all the people of our team! I want to thank our uplines Doreen Carter, Ian and Judy Murray and Burrell Cross for their great support and motivation. They're always here for us when we need them and they're wonderful people to work with!
I am Hans Schokker, 50 years old, father of 7 kids and grandfather of two beautiful granddaughters. I live in the Netherlands and have been working for many years as a manager in the IT industry. In 2001 my wife started getting health problems and in 2002 they discovered that she had a benign tumor in her pituitary gland which caused serious health problems. She had surgery, but after a year the health problems became worse. We then visited a new therapist in the Netherlands who worked with biophotonics and after three treatments with this therapy all the health problems were gone. We decided to follow an education to learn ourselves how to help people with this therapy and in 2005 we started with our own natural health business. I stopped working as an IT manager and started treating people with health problems. In 2009 my wife, who was always searching on the Internet for good and healthy products, discovered Xoçai and asked me if we could use this product in our health center. I contacted Gea Schepers and she was so enthusiastic about Xoçai and about MXI that I decided to enroll as a Basic Associate. We started using Xoçai ourselves and started testing the chocolate to see if it would be good for our clients and the results were positive. We started advising people to use Xoçai complementary to the treatments we gave them. We noticed that our treatments and Xoçai were a perfect combination because health problems disappeared faster when clients used Xoçai. Gea and I started to work together as business partners and we built a team of almost 200 distributors and Affiliates. In 2011 Doreen Carter gave me the opportunity to visit the IGC2011 in Indianapolis and for me that was a turning point and a huge wake up call. I learned so much during this Celebration and saw the big picture. I was full of ideas and energy when I came back to the Netherlands and Gea and I made a strategy and the result of this strategy was that we enrolled a lot of new Business Builders and the both of us qualified for the Caribbean Cruise. The cruise was amazing and inspiring and was the major breakthrough for my Xoçai business. And only two months after the Cruise I became Gold Executive. Gea and I made a strategy to combine the old way (based on volume) with the new way (ETE Program) and now there are two Gold Executives in the Netherlands! We worked very hard for two weeks, almost 80 hours a week but it was worth it. We kept our focus on the plan we made and although there were some major bumps on the road, we never stopped or lost track. I want to thank my personal sponsor, Gea Schepers, for her support. I am so proud that she is the first Gold Executive in the Netherlands, she so much deserves it! Gea, it is an honor to have you as my business partner and it's great to work with you and make our XocoTeam grow and help other people become successful. People like Michel Boer, Mirella Braamse, Loes Raeven, Joyce Sigterman, Elleke Meesters, and many others you will hear more from in the future. I also want to thank Doreen Carter, Ian and Judy Murray and Burrell Cross. They believed in me and inspired and motivated me and helped me when there were problems I couldn't solve, but they did! I think MXI is an amazing company. At the convention in Indianapolis and at the cruise I enjoyed the warmth and the sympathy and was impressed by the way Andrew and Jeanette care for all the people in the Xoçai business. I'm glad to be part of this Xoçai "family".
