Yoga returns to TAS!

Yoga_Soaring Eagle 

Native Miamian, and founder of Soaring Eagle Yoga, Jill Rapperport, is an experienced registered yoga instructor, meditation teacher, Level III Reiki master, shaman and spiritual  life coach. She brings a unique blend of business experience, a breadth of yoga knowledge, philosophy experience, anatomical knowledge, musical training and varied spiritual practices to her classes. 

  

Jill brings to Tropical Audubon quality instruction on all the limbs of yoga, including meditation and philosophy.

South Dade Birding

 On Sat., October 13 Raul Urgelles will lead this all day carpool trip, which may include stops at Lucky Hammock, Castellow Hammock and Dump Marsh. Meet in the parking lot of the Coe Visitor Center at Everglades National Park at 7:30am. No fee. Bring lunch. Se habla espaņol!

A.D. Barnes Park Bird Walk Birding

 On Sun., October 14, Bill Boeringer will lead birders through A.D. Barnes Park. Enter on SW 72nd Ave. just north of Bird Rd. (SW 40th St.), turn left at the T intersection and park in spaces on either side of the road. Meet at 7:30am, returning at approximately 11:00am. No fee.

Shark Valley / Loop Road Birding

On Sat., October 20, Paul Bithorn will lead this carpool trip. Meet at 8:00 AM at the airboat concession on the north side of Tamiami Trail (US 41), one mile west of the Shark Valley entrance. There is an entrance fee to Shark Valley. Bring lunch.

Crandon Park Birding

On Sun., October 21, Rangel Diaz will lead birders through Crandon Park on Key Biscayne. Meet at 7:30 AM at the Crandon Visitor and Nature Center at Parking Lot #1, accessed via the North Beach entrance to the park (no fee before 8:00 AM). The tour will start at the Coastal Dune Trail, followed by a walk along the beach to the mud flats for shorebirds and a visit to Crandon Gardens.

Everglades National Park Beginning Birding

On Sat., October 27, Jeff Weber will lead this trip. Meet in the parking lot of the Coe Visitor Center at Everglades National Park at 7:30am. There is an entrance fee to the park. Bring lunch.

Located just a few steps west of the TAS property, Whisk Gourmet is owned by siblings Brendan and Kristin Connor, and is critically praised for its deftly prepared locally and seasonally inspired dishes turned out with contemporary American flair.
 
Signature dishes include homemade shaved parmesan cheese and cracked pepper potato chips, cumin-dusted grilled chicken breast and the house classic fried green tomato sandwich.

The Applicant Brown, now referred to as Kendall Properties, seeks to remove a restrictive covenant that would prevent residential housing on the edge of the Urban Development Boundary (UDB).  

 

The Board of County Commissioners (BCC) is taking a final vote on this issue on their next BCC meeting on Wed., October 3.

 

Read the letter we sent out to the BCC back on 2011, and to the PAB on August 20th, 2012. Get involved and tell your Commissioner to uphold the covenant the applicants had included in their application!

All the fieldtrips for the event will be led by TAS Experts. On Thursday and Friday, October 4 and 5, there will be off-site birding tours around the South Florida Community! Interested participants will meet TAS Leaders at 7:30 a.m. at the Visitor Center at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and leave as a group. Back in 2011, the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Task Force (SFERTF) endorsed a state-federal initiative to speed up planning for key restoration projects in the heart of the Everglades, known as the Central Everglades Planning Project (CEPP).


The SFERTF workshop originally scheduled for October 2, 2012 has been rescheduled to October 25, 2012.   Public Participation is a key component of CEPP, join us and help create continued momentum to restore America's Everglades and ensure water for millions of Floridians!

This event promises a weekend full of local area artists, Hispanic & Latin American cultural exhibitions, musical and folkloric dance presentations.

Hawkwatch donors packThe Florida Keys Hawkwatch is the longest running raptor migration project in the region. It monitors the passage of 18 raptor species and as many as 20,000 birds each fall.
 

Help Tropical Audubon raise funds for this important project that monitors birds of prey as they journey down the Atlantic Flyway, through the Keys, towards the Caribbean and beyond! You can make the 13th Florida Keys Hawkwatch season a success! Volunteers get free housing in the Keys.     

 

With your support of only $100, you will receive a Hawkwatch Donor's Package that includes a limited edition Florida Keys Hawkwatcht T-shirt, a raptor ID chart and project information brochure, a Hawkwatch sticker, a Tropical Audubon Society canteen and the satisfaction of contributing to the conservation and study of raptors.

The Everglades Coalition is an alliance of more than fifty local, state and national conservation and environmental organizations dedicated to full restoration of the greater Everglades ecosystem, from the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes into Lake Okeechobee and to the estuaries, through the River of Grass, out to Florida Bay and the Keys.
