Miami-Dade Expressway Authority is planning to expand the 836 Dolphin Expressway west toward Krome Avenue and then south to Tamiami Airport. This project would accelerate westward development, threaten agriculture, and threaten Everglades restoration. Volunteers Needed: Statewide to Survey Florida's Beaches for Winter Birds
Feb. 3 - 5| Various locations

Wondering what you can do on a cool winter day at one of Florida's gorgeous beaches? The statewide mid-winter shorebird survey window is coming up on the weekend of February 3-5, 2012.
This is an annual survey administered by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission through the network of Shorebird Partnerships on the Florida Gulf and Atlantic coasts.
Data collected during these surveys is important not only to land managers and wildlife agencies in Florida but to researchers studying range-wide causes of population declines. Please contact Monique Borboen, Florida's East Coast for more information and to participate. |

Protect Biscayne Bay!
Contact your Florida representatives today

Enjoy Biscayne Bay's water quality? Two environmental bills, HB503 and SB716, propose amendments harming Florida's environment. Changes to this established procedure could lead to adverse effects in the Biscayne Bay due to projects being permitted ahead of proper review by DEP regulatory staff. HB503 will be moving through the Agriculture & Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee.
HB 503 and SB 716 may change how coastal permits are issued where turbidity and sediment quality standards are changed. This will increase pollution in our coastal waterways and threaten natural habitats. Furthermore, changes in regulation will prohibit a county agency from requiring that an applicant first acquire proper approvals from state and federal agencies before the county issues a permit. It is not a county's purview to ensure that the proposed activities do not adversely affect state managed areas. It provides for more decentralization amongst the counties at a time when there are many ongoing state projects, thus staging the scene for serious conflict.
TAS is opposed to Section 5 of SB 716 and HB 503 as it is another all out attack on Biscayne Bay. Read our talking points and our letter to the Agriculture and Natural Resources Sub-Committee. Click here for more information on proposed environmental bills.

Save Our Matheson Hammock Park!
Sign the Petition
Save Matheson Hammock Park from boat storage! The County recently awarded a private company the right to build a massive, 5-story, 62,000 sq ft boat warehouse at Matheson Hammock Park. We are against this application as it is a dredge and fill project in a very pristine and popular birding destination. The boat warehouse cannot be built on Matheson Hammock Park without the approval of the City of Coral Gables.
Click here to send a message to the City of Coral Gables that you OPPOSE THE BOAT WAREHOUSE on Matheson Hammock Park! |
