Sat., Dec. 4- South Florida Exotics Trip. Paul Bithorn will lead birders in search of parrots, bulbuls, maynas, and other introduced species in this carpool trip. Meet at 1:00 p.m. at the east parking lot of Baptist Hospital (8950 N. Kendall Drive).
Sat., Dec. 11- Plantation Preserve Birding. South Florida Audubon Society's Paddy Cunningham invites TAS to join her for a tour of Plantation Preserve in central Broward County. The preserve is on Broward Blvd., two miles east of University Drive. Meet Paddy at 8:00 a.m. at the trailhead past the playground. The tour includes a stop at Target Wetlands; lunch at a local restaurant will follow.
Sat., Jan 8 - Everglades National Park Birding. John Boyd will lead this all day carpool trip. Meet in the parking lot of the Coe Visitor Center at Everglades National Park at 7:30 a.m. There is an entrance fee to the park. Bring lunch. |

6th Annual Holiday Potluck

Celebrate with Tropical Audubon Society, Dade Chapter Florida Native Plant Society, Miami Blue Chapter, North American Butterfly Assoc., and TREEmendous Miami at Simpson Park for our annual potluck picnic. Rain or shine, we will meet at Simpson Park. Enjoy lunch on the porch of the historic Garden Center and visit with old and new friends under a canopy of native trees. City of Miami Park Naturalist Juan Fernandez will lead a tour in this beautiful remnant of Brickell Hammock.

Homestead Speedway Application for Expansion, Planning Advisory Board

The Planning & Advisory Board will review the Homestead Speedway application, which is a large-scale UDB movement. Currently, the wisdom of our county's planning & zoning staff suggest that there's no need to mvoe the line unil 2025.
They applicant seeks to add 12,000 spectator seats and to expand the Urban Development Boundary (UDB) to include new acreage. They currently do not fill the seats that they have and the Indy Race has pulled out recently. The Folio numbers are: 10-7922-001-0071; ; 10-7923-001-0071; 10-7923-001-0023. Make your voice heard. Join us at the SOMI Art Walk with our feature artist, Gisela Llorens. View her use of soft pastels to form landscapes, florals, and still life works. Her prints and art will be for sale.
Come out and interact with Gisela, other art lovers, and the Tropical Audubon staff and enjoy the night out! We hope to see you at the Doc Thomas House! The 'Bird Bar' will be open. This is a free and public event.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park 50th Anniversary Celebration Sat., Dec. 11| 9 - 3 p.m.| John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park
America's first undersea park turns 50! Festivities will be from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with park entrance fees waived for the day. The Keynote Speaker, world-renowned oceanographer and underwater explorer Dr. Sylvia Earle, will speak at 10:00 a.m. Descendants of John D. Pennekamp, as well as former park staff, will share their stories. There will be an Environmental and Educational Expo, complete with youth activities and additional speakers.

Tamiami Trail project needs your support Everglades National Park released the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the next phase of the Tamiami Trail project, which recommends an additional 5.5 miles of bridging of the trail to restore much-needed fresh water flows to the Everglades. Are you a member of an organization or a representative of a municipality? Do something positive for our community by submitting a letter of support or adopting a resolution in support of this project. Send your letters or resolutions to Laura Reynolds, as we are building a coalition of public support and need your help.

The Everglades Coalition is an alliance of more than fifty local, state and national conservation and environmental organizations dedicated to full restoration of the greater Everglades ecosystem, from the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes into Lake Okeechobee and to the estuaries, through the River of Grass, out to Florida Bay and the Keys. The current Co-Chairs are Mark Perry, Florida Oceanographic Society and Julie Hill-Gabriel, Audubon.

The Board of County Commissioners will vote soon on amendments to the Comprehensive Development Master Plan (CDMP), which is updated every seven years. This is part of the Evaluation Appraisal Report, which will eventually amend the CDMP. This is your opportunity to encourage your commissioners to pass all the amendments recommended by the Planning & Zoning staff.
The four over-arching issues being addressed are: Urban Development Boundary, Capacity and Expansion; Climate Change/Sea Level Rise; Directing Growth and Employment; Transportation/Mobility.

Share your Everglades knowledge with a group of at-risk children and teens who have not had the opportunity to spend an afternoon among one of nature's most splendid creations. If you would like to volunteer as a naturalist please see the flier for more details and contact Kiki Mutis. Meet at the Ernest F. Coe Everglades National Park visitor's center in Homestead at 8:45 a.m. where we will greet the children. We will then lead small groups through the Royal Palm board walk and Long Pine Key habitats. |
