New Trustees Appointed at
YCS Annual Meeting

At this year's annual meeting, YCS President and CEO Richard Mingoia highlighted the year's achievements and thanked the many private and corporate supporters that made it possible for the agency to maintain its services despite the economic down turn.  Dominick D' Agosta, Board chair, then introduced the five trustees who recently joined the Foundation Board:  Linda Bowden, Mindy Roth, Leslie Schlesinger, Virginia Shea, and John Uzzi.

YCS Outpatient Clinic named
in honor of Dr. Helen May Strauss
It seemed only fitting that the naming of the Dr. Helen May Strauss Clinic happen at the celbration of the 10th anniversary celebration of the YCS Institute. Dr. Strauss was devoted to the Institute and guided many of the interns at weekly clinical review meetings. The clinic, based in East Orange and serving the Greater Essex community, has a threefold mission:  It will provide clinical services for families with children birth to 6, mental health services for children and families 7 to 21, and substance/ alcohol abuse counseling for children up to the age of 25.

Recovery School proposal awarded
$500,000 Federal grant

The US Department of Education awarded YCS a three-year grant for the creation of a Recovery Charter High School in Newark. The school will serve 100 teens, grades 9 - 12, who are recovering from substance abuse and students who wish to learn in a setting that is free from the threats of addictive substances.

Congressman Albio Sires congratulated YCS in a letter saying, "I applaud the Recovery Charter High School's mission to provide students with a safe, sober supportive school environment. Through numerous academic support services and a life skills focused curriculum, students will be prepared to not only abstain from drugs and alcohol, but also succeed academically."

The City of Newark and its residents would benefit greatly from the Recovery Charter High School and I hope the State of New Jersey will give the application careful consideration."

--Cory A. Booker, Mayor, City of Newark

The founders of the proposed charter school include members from Rutgers University, Vision of Hope Community Development Corporation and professionals working in the field of education and counseling in Essex County.

The proposal for the creation of the Recovery Charter School is currently being reviewed by the N.J. Department of Education - Office of Charter School.

Walk for YCS
Fun for everyone!

This year the Friends of YCS enlisted the help of Outback Steak House in Edgewater Commons  to set the stage for a wonderful walk along the Hudson River waterfront in Edgewater.  There was live music, treats for the kids, Starbucks coffee and breakfast for the adults as well as a  chance to limber up with a free massage.

One month prior to the event, It's a Grind coffee house in Englewood hosted a pre-event Walk sign-up with lots of live music and dinner.

On Nov. 2, 2010, we will go to the polls to choose U.S. Congressional Representatives in all of  N.J.'s 13 districts. The winners of this election will make critical decisions that will affect our children today - and far into the future.

Before you vote you can, learn more about your candidates' position on children's issues. Our colleagues from The Advocates for Children of New Jersey (ACNJ) have recently released a guide on early learning issues, with key questions to ask your candidates where they stand on early learning/interventions.
