What Are Students Saying about the MET Courses?

"Excellent presentation and Tom is very good at making a complex concept, significantly less complex.  I am not overwhelmed and honestly think that I can begin to feel competent with MET!  His personal stories, humor and lack of arrogance make him an excellent instructor."

Questions from the Mail Room

Email Questions

Q:  Hi Tom,  I watched your video clips and you are a master of evaluation. I have been practicing massage therapy for 18 years. In 1999 I became very intrested in Muscle Energy Techniques and tried to study from Onsen videos. I became very frustrated and packed it in never fully learning what I wanted to. I came across your videos by accident and ordered your workbooks. I was wondering if your workbooks have assessment charts for use in clinical practice? If not, how do you chart in your clinic?

I incorporate Active Isolated Stretching into all my sessions. I see you use PNF for the large muscle groups. From your knowledge would you say PNF is a favorable method to use?

Ken C.

A:  Hi Ken, Since everyone has their own way they like to document I leave it up to the therapists to do their documentation as they need or are required by their individual license. I do have a sample of how I document in the back index of each manual so check it out and see if it works for you. The comments I have gotten back from doctors are that the notes are so easy to read and find out what I think the issue is that many of them look forward to getting my evaluation summaries.

The techniques I use for large muscle groups are still referred to as Muscle Energy, but this is very close to PNF stretching or AIS. They both use the spindle and contractions and stretching.
In the end, they are all different names and slightly different methods to achieve the same effect with the big groups. Someday, you may combine all the techniques into a unique method of your own . . .

Our Seminars

Thomas K. Ockler, PT

For those of you who have taken Muscle Energy courses before and are still struggling...  Or if you have never taken a Muscle Energy course because you heard it was too hard... These are the courses for you.

Muscle Energy Technique is one of the most effective and valuable manual techniques for the identification and correction of somatic asymmetry and hypomobility. These techniques can be used immediately to find and correct the causes of all types of pain. These are not cover up procedures, but rather techniques that cure the problem with dramatic results.

Unlike manipulative therapies, which presume joints are stuck out of place by some physiologic glue, the beauty of Muscle Energy is that it works through an evidence-based neuro physiologic principle.  And that is the joints are held out of place by muscles that have too much tone.

In his 33 years of clinical practice, Tom Ockler P.T. has had extensive teaching experience throughout the United States, Canada, England and Australia.

As a teacher, Tom has earned the nickname "The Patch Adams of Physical Therapy" due to his unique style of injecting humor into complicated subjects. He has developed teaching methods that explain very complicated subjects in easily understandable formats. His five teaching manuals have been hailed by students as the "most user-friendly and useful Muscle Energy manuals ever."
