Greetings!

Since the expansion is popping up at a rapid pace, I have decided to use this month's letter to bring you up to date on all that will be happening over the next 30 days. It's exciting!

This week, construction started on what is now known as Studio II. The existing roof will be taken off to allow us to begin building the new 2nd story. This requires that Racquetball Court 4 be closed for a couple of days to ensure that no one is injured by debris. Installation of the new roof should be completed in approximately a week, allowing them to start on the stairway to the new Mind and Body haven. This studio on the second floor will be an oasis for those of us practicing Yoga, Pilates, and PiYo in all of their forms. Once the second floor is constructed, we will put up the wall dividing the first floor into two separate spaces. Looking into the existing doors, imagine the Cycling Studio occupying the right half of the space with the new TRX Studio taking the space immediately in front of the glass entrance. A new door will be added to allow direct access to Cycle. Having designated spaces for these three different modalities will allow us to offer more classes to you.

The other portion of the expansion includes the Multi-Use room. It is the size of a 3/4 scale basketball court. In fact, it will have two retractable hoops that will be used for basketball at specific times of the day during the week. Its primary function however, is that of a large group fitness studio. In recent months, we have had Strength & Zumba classes that were so large, members had to be turned away. We want to ensure adequate space for everyone!  The room will also have a state-of-the art sound system that is guaranteed to get you moving.

We anticipate celebrating the Grand Opening of the Mind and Body Studio the week of July 18th. Stay tuned for a week full of guest lectures, lots of classes and special events. The Multi-Use room will be launched in August and you can be sure that Kari Merrill, our Group Fitness Director, has something up her sleeve that you won't want to miss!

Now is a great time to tell your friends and family that Western is the place to be. You might want to practice your membership pitch because Dori is planning a fall party that could reward you handsomely for any referrals that translate into a new membership.

Enjoy the first unofficial month of Summer. We deserve it!

Sincerely,

Susan Peltier                                                                       General Manager

Tennis Tip of the Month

The 'Time Saver'
by Jon Schaff, Racquet Sports Director

There are times when your opponent(s) gets you on the run, you are stretching, barely getting to the ball -  what should you do?  It is time to use the 'Time Saver'.

The 'time saver' is a high looping ground stoke with the intention of allowing the player more time to recover and get back into position.  It is very similar to a lob, except that the opponent is not necessarily at the net.  To hit the 'time saver,' you need to open your racquet face and swing more vertically through the ball.  The swing speed should be slower than a normal ground stroke to keep it from going long.

Once you throw in the 'time saver' get back into the proper position, catch your breath, and get ready for the next ball.  If they back way up by the back curtain to get your 'time saver,' this would be a great time to sneak up to the net.

If you find yourself in trouble, throw in the 'time saver' to get back into the point.  Try this in your next match and let me know how it goes.
