Tennis Tip of the Month
by Jon Schaff, Racquet Sports Director
Doubles 'I' Formation
Happy Spring, everyone! Adult Team Tennis starts this month and for those not familiar, it is a nationwide adult tennis league in which teams compete locally once per week with 2 singles slots and 3 doubles teams. Since most players play doubles, this month's tip focuses on the 'I' formation.
In the traditional doubles formation, the server stands in the middle of his/her half of the court and the net partner starts in the center of the service box on the other half of the court. The 'I' formation is when the server stands next to the center hash mark on the baseline and the net partner starts on the same half of the court (about 2 steps to the right of the center service line when the partner is serving to the deuce box). The partners will communicate before the point begins which partner will then move to cover the open half of the court.
There are 3 main reasons why you should try this formation. First, it is a different look than the traditional formation and may cause confusion on the part of your opponents. Second, if you are not winning, it is time to try something different. Third, the 'I' formation takes away an opponent's great cross court return of serve, since they would now be hitting it right to the net player.
Try the 'I' formation in your next doubles match and let me know how it goes.
