Greetings!

The old saying is that "good things are worth waiting for" and I agree. It seems like it has been a long time since Prevea erected the wonderful rendering of their new clinic to be located in conjunction with Western's facility. I am excited to announce that we are finally breaking ground on the Prevea/Western expansion this coming week. The past months have been spent designing an amazing health & wellness complex that will offer you an unprecedented amount of services and programs.

We are thrilled to begin an expansion of our facility. We will be adding a huge multi-purpose room that includes a 3/4 scale basketball court, as well as space for Group Exercise classes for up to 70 participants. Studio II will become a two- level structure with a Mind & Body retreat located on the second floor. The current Studio II space will be divided into a designated Cycle Studio, complete with ambient lighting and a new sound system. The other half will be a more private room for small group classes such as TRX or personal training. In addition, there will be a Education Center on the clinic side that will allow lectures and demos for up to 120 people. We will be Green Bay's health and wellness destination.

We will try to make the construction phase as non-intrusive as possible. Many of you have expressed concern about parking, but the reality is that during construction, we will lose less than 10 regular parking spots. Once completed, we will have room for over 200 cars. Expanded parking and studio space, PLUS a Prevea clinic in our backyard, make this expansion well worth the wait.

Have a great April!

Tennis Tip of the Month

Mastering the Return of Serve
by Jon Schaff, Racquet Sports Director

The return of serve is the most missed shot in tennis.  Most players try to do too much with the shot and yet, just getting it back in the court puts the server on the offensive.  Here are some tips on mastering the return of serve.

Take a shorter backswing.  Usually the serve comes at you faster than a ground stroke so this reduction in reaction time requires quicker preparation.  Try taking a shorter backswing, bring the racquet back so your racquet head is just slightly behind you.  This shorter preparation will allow you a little more time to line up your return.  Remember to take a full follow through to get the topspin needed to keep the ball in.

Aim over the net strap.  There is no need to try to hit a winner off your return of serve.  The main goal is to make a high quantity of returns and make the server work for every point.  Aiming over the net strap is a good visual target and since the net is 6 inches lower, compared to a down the line return, you have more room for error.  This cross court target also keeps it away from the net player in doubles and allows you to get back into position sooner in singles.

Adjust your positioning.  Every server is different.  Some blast huge first serve bombs, others like to throw crazy spins at you.  Try adjusting your return of serve positions.  For example, if someone has a giant first serve, stand back a few steps so you have more time.  If someone keeps slicing you out wide, start a few steps closer to the alley so you do not have to run and catch up with the spin.  One of my favorites is to step way in, a few steps behind the service line.  This will give you less reaction time (use your shorter backswing tip listed above) but it does get in their head and may force a double fault.

Try these tips in your next match, let me know how it goes.

See you at the courts!

1st Annual Stone Classic Raises Over $4,000

The 1st Annual Stone Classic Doubles Racquetball Tournament was held Saturday, March 26th, at WR&FC raising $4,001 for the Charlie Knuth Benefit Fund. Charlie is the 5 yr. old boy from Darboy, WI who suffers from a rare skin-blistering disease that has no known cure. He has undergone extensive, on-going medical treatment including a recent stem-cell transplant, which is showing promising results.

Thirty players entered the tournament spearheaded by Chris Knight and Bernie Scheer, who donated shirts through Bay Promotion. This  tournament continues the tradition of the Brian Hermans Memorial Tournament which raised over $30,000 during it's 8 year span. Steve Salamone, founder of the Hermans tournament and our Junior Racquetball Program Director, assisted Knight and Scheer. Steve Weise and Marty Meyers coordinated raffle donations and refreshments. Anna Johnson, massage therapist from Fitnessology, donated her services for chair massages and raised over $200 in 3 hours.

Winners of the Stone Classic are:

1st Place:  Steve Salamone & Steve Warner

2nd Place: Pete Wickman & Tom Dalebroux
