Greetings!

Did you know that "March Madness" really has nothing to do with basketball? Before basketball coined the term, there are many references in history & literature to March being the month for crazy behavior.

Lewis Carroll created his famous lunatic the "Mad Hatter...a March Hare". "Beware the Ides of March," was an unheeded warning about friends going wild, and let's not forget that Fat Tuesday - a night of misbehavior - often often lands in this month. I think the craziness is because we are all sick of winter and are looking for a way to express this feeling.

So if you are experiencing the Winters Blues, I have some suggestions that don't include causing mayhem and regretting it the next day. The solution might be getting involved in a short term diversion. Re-direct your focus on learning something new. Whether you decide to try out our Ballroom Dance Class, challenge yourself with an "Amped Up" high-intensity workout or take an art class at a local studio, you might find yourself thinking a little less about winter. Investigate what interests you and see if there is something out there that might just help you get through the few remaining weeks of Madness.

Meet a Staff Member - Deb Guenterberg, R.D.

This spring, a member of our staff will fulfill a 20-year dream when she runs her first  Boston Marathon. Deb Guenterberg, a Prevea Registered Dietitian, ran her first marathon when she was in college. The goal of competing in the Boston Marathon, which she set for herself almost 27 years ago, came one step closer to reality in September, when she qualified for the race by 30 seconds!

Deb is committed  to helping others achieve their goals. By conducting nutritional programs in schools and corporations and one-on-one sessions that focus on a variety of nutritional issues, she helps her clients adopt healthier habits. Discussing topics from weight gain or loss, diabetes control, to eating for endurance sports like running, Deb transfers her passion to others in hopes that their quality of life will improve. To set up an appointment with Deb to discuss any nutritional issues you might have, call the front desk at 497-1161.

Cheering for Deb as she competes in Boston will be her brother  Kevin, husband Jim and two sons, Logan & Caleb. All of us here at Western will be there in spirit and wish her the very best!

Tennis Tip of the Month

How to Cover the Lob
by Jon Schaff, Racquet Sports Director

It has happened to all of us - we get to the net only to have the opponent lob the ball over our head.  The lob is a very effective shot, especially in doubles.  In this tip of the month we will talk about how to cover this lob.

First, practice proper overhead technique.  The overhead is the best defense against the lob.  If you have proper footwork technique and you crush your overheads, your opponent will stop trying to lob you.  As soon as you see the lob go up, make sure you turn sideways while dropping back on your right foot (if you are right handed) and get yourself positioned under the ball.  Use your left hand (again if you are right handed) as a guide as if you are lining up to catch the ball.  Once you are in the proper position reach up and make contact with your overhead as high as you can reach.  After you crush this overhead move forward toward the net and look to put away the next ball.

Another way to defend the doubles lob is the switch and cover.  If the ball goes over the head of the partner at the net, and they cannot get to it as an overhead, the back player should yell "I got it, switch."  The net player should then switch to the other half of the court and back to the service line.  The back player will run down the lob and remain on that half of the court unless another "switch" happens.

If your opponent is lobbing consistently, the ball you are sending them must be too easy.  Try mixing up your shots with different speeds, spots and spins (see March 2010 newsletter).  Most good 'lobbers' do not lob well moving forward, so try hitting your shots short and force them to run in.

Keep working on your overhead footwork, communicate with your partner and mix up your shot selection.  These tips will help you cover the lob.
