Tennis Tip of the Month Set Your Tennis Goals for 2011 by Jon Schaff, Racquet Sports Director
HAPPY NEW YEAR! We had a great 2010 with all of you at the club. During the year we saw 17 tournaments, raised over $3,800 in our breast cancer event, had a record number of summer USTA adult teams, with 5 making the state tournament and 2 teams winning state and we have many of our fall/winter USTA teams winning their divisions too. Thanks to all that have participated in and supported Western's tennis!
A new year is here and it is time for your new year's resolutions. You should set yourself a tennis goal as well. Your goals may be to play more tennis, improve a stroke, improve your fitness so you move more quickly on the court, defeat your nemesis, or have your team reach sectionals. Here are a few tips is setting your goals for 2011.
Write the goals down. Keep this list in your tennis bag, or on the fridge, give it to your tennis coach, somewhere that you can see it and have it remind you of your goals. The list should be specific, for example, not 'I want a better forehand' but 'To learn a topspin forehand that I can be confident in and use as my weapon.'
Make a realistic action plan. We all have very busy lives so make your action plan realistic but attainable. If your goal is to develop that topspin forehand, a great action plan is to take a lesson and learn the proper technique. Then you must practice the shot. Set aside at least one hour per week when you only hit forehands either again with a teaching pro or ball machine or friend.
Re-evaluate your goals throughout the year. Keep returning to your list to see if you have accomplished your goals. If you have achieved your goals, good for you, time to make a new goals list.
Putting down your goals is writing is an excellent tool to hold yourself accountable. Be patient but focused on your mission and you will succeed.
See you at the courts!
