| Member of the Month - Caleb Johnson | |
Determination is a word personified by one of our members who launched a serious, life changing program that has resulted in an 88 pound weight loss. 25-year-old Caleb Johnson felt tired and lethargic and decided to do something about it.
Caleb's self-directed plan consists of six smaller meals a day that focus on fruits & veggies with limited fat, no alcohol and an exercise routine that brought him to the club six days a week, sometimes twice a day. He set small achievable goals for himself and as the changes in his body became apparent, he would assess and re-evaluate his program and make adjustments where needed. "Once you make up your mind, you'd be surprised how fast you may see results," said Caleb.
Being committed to a lifestyle change requires that new goals are continually being set. He would like to lose another 15 pounds, but Caleb's biggest goal so far is to compete in his first triathlon, possibly by next summer. Since his program, "...has influenced (his) mind, body and spirit," we are sure that he will be successful in his ongoing quest for self-improvement. We congratulate him and wish him much continued success! |

Tennis Tip of the MonthVideo - A Great Learning Toolby Jon Schaff, Racquet Sports Director Most people are visual learners. We learn best when seeing the correct procedure or, in the case of tennis, a swing path. As a tennis teacher, I know that showing the proper mechanics is a HUGE part of learning, but sometimes the pro showing the correct swing path may not be enough. I have found that filming the student and having them see what they are doing is a GREAT learning tool. I am sure you have heard the Western tennis staff say 'Watch the ball,' 'Swing low to high,' or 'Don't swing on the volley.' You may feel you are doing exactly what the teacher wants. That is where watching yourself on video will help you start to see some imperfections which will help you make adjustments. During a video lesson, our staff videos the repetition of a specific stroke. Then we go to the mezzanine and watch the video on one of the televisions. Typically, we watch the first few strokes in real time and talk about what we see. Then we will break it down frame by frame and find a few corrections that we can focus on in the lesson. After a few weeks on the practice court, a new video should be made to track progress. Watching the pros on TV is a good learning tool, too. The hard part is they swing so darn fast it is hard to copy what they do. Here are a few websites that have slow-motion video of the touring pros: www.playerdevelopment.usta.com/pdmediabooks/players.asp from the USTA, has 73 top pros, free www.tennisone.comexcellent selection, annual fee $79 www.tennisplayer.net excellent selection and analysis, $19.95/month Please keep in mind these are top athletes and some things they do may not be best for your game. Video is a great tool and it can really help your tennis game. Please contact any of our Western tennis staff members if you are interested in watching yourself on video and raising the level of your tennis. See you at the courts!
Next month - Get in shape for tennis!
