Greetings!
I am going to forego my usual letter of the month so you can take a little more time to learn about a life well spent.  Al Loomer passed away in May at the age of 97. As one of our oldest, most active and beloved members, Al personified the adage that "Tennis is a lifetime sport".

Have a great September!

Member of the Month - Al Loomer
Born in Canada, Al lived a full and colorful live, becoming Meteorologist-in-Charge for the Royal Canadian Air Force Navigational School and then professor emeritus of meteorology and mathematics at UWGB.  He was the first meteorologist to report the weather live on local TV. While raising 5 sons, Al was president of the Brown County Council of Churches, a host for Elderhostel programs, a passionate bridge player and lover of classical music; but tennis was his favorite pastime.

Al was once asked during a television interview, "Now that you're 90, what do you think you'll do when you can no longer play tennis?" Always quick-witted, Al quipped, "I guess I'll have to take up golf!"  Charlie Trainer remembers Al saying after missing a return shot, "50 years ago I could have gotten that!"

Jerry Menne recalls that the tennis group often went to breakfast after playing. Always before his time, Al would order "Egg Beaters" and swap the side of bacon with Don Erickson's fresh fruit.  "No wonder Al lived to be 97!" said Jerry.

The group of doubles players that you see around the club three mornings a week was started by Al more than 25 years ago.  He played with his friends until he was 96. Always the optimist, even into his 90's, Al renewed his membership two years at a time.

In honor of Al's commitment to his friends, family and Western,   a plaque will be soon be placed in the upper mezzanine. Look for it and celebrate a life spent well!

Tennis Tip of the Month
Conquering the Overhead

by Jon Schaff, Racquet Sports Director

BAM! Wow does it feel good when you get to smash the overhead.  It is the most powerful shot in tennis, one that should end the point.  Here are some tips to improve your overhead.
Turn and run.  As soon as you see the lob come off your opponent's strings, turn your body sideways perpendicular to the net, as you drop step away from the net.  As you turn, bring the racquet straight back behind your head, do not drop it down like you would on a serve.  If it is a deep lob, you will need to turn the hips and run toward the baseline while keeping your eyes on the ball.  This is much faster than shuffling and you should never back pedal.
Extend up at contact.  Most players wait too long and end up hitting the ball low in their strike zone.  This loses power and sends the ball into the net.  Remember to reach up and make contact with your arm at full extension, just like a serve.  Your racquet should then finish near your opposite pocket.
Close back in.  Because your overhead is so HUGE, if they do get it back it will probably be a weak ball.  Right after you smash that overhead rush back to the net so you can put away that easy volley.
Don't forget to watch the U.S. Open, which starts August 30th!

See you at the courts!
