Greetings!

Summer is a bit quieter around here and has given our staff members time to put together some great ideas for the  fall!  In the middle of a brainstorming session on how to improve Western, an idea began to germinate. If we are trying to be a health resource for our members and we have the advantage of having some of the finest instructors and trainers PLUS our partner in Prevea, could we start to offer short courses that take on an interdisciplinary approach to fitness and wellness?

The result of this idea is The Western Link. We chose this name because we thought it perfectly described what we try to do here on a daily basis. At Western, we are about making connections. Whether it is getting new members plugged into the perfect group exercise class or introducing someone to a new way of thinking about food, we believe our job is to help you "link" up connections that will make your wellness goals a reality.

Check out The Western Link section below for more information on the first two offerings. I think you'll be excited at the possibilities.

Have a great August!

Members of the Month - Sean & Megan Harrison
Our members of the month are a brother and sister team that inspire us because they have embraced fitness at such an early age!

Sean and Megan Harrison are ardent tennis players who began playing the game when they were just 3 years old. In addition to private & group lessons, they participate in Friday Night Match Play. At 13, Sean's short term goal is to get to the top of the challenge ladder. His long term goal is to make the team at Notre Dame High School. Megan, who is 10, was a finalist in last month's tournament for girls 12 and under. Megan broke her leg last year and has also spent her time regaining her strength and agility.

In addition to tennis, Sean & Megan are personal training with Shane McMullen from Fitnessology. They believe that this additional activity will improve their game and their overall health. We commend Sean & Megan's parents, Denise and Richard Harrison, for helping their kids develop great exercise habits that should inspire all of us!

Tennis Tip of the Month

What's the right racquet for me?
by Jon Schaff, Racquet Sports Director

Racquet technology is changing all the time.  New materials, different shapes and head sizes -sometimes it can get a little confusing.  Here are a few tips on choosing the racquet that is best for your game.

HEAD SIZE  Racquets come in a variety of head sizes from 85 square inches to 135 square inches.   The larger the head size (110 - 135 square inches), the more power and the bigger the sweet spot. The smaller the head size (85-109 square inches) the more control and stability at contact.  Typically if you like to swing hard, you will want a smaller head size and if you are more of a finesse/placement player, you will want the oversized racquet.

WEIGHT Racquet weights range from 8 ounces to about 13 ounces. The heavier the racquet, the more control, stability and less shock at contact.  The lighter the racquet, the more maneuverability and ability to swing faster.  Typically if you like to swing long and fast you, will want a heavier racquet. If you have shorter, slower swing speed, you will want a lighter racquet.

GRIP SIZE Adult racquet grip sizes range from 4 inches to 4 ¾ inches.

A good way to measure if you have the proper grip size is to hold your racquet, and place your other index finger between your fingertips and the palm of your hand.  If there is a lot of wiggle room the grip is too small, if you cannot fit a finger your grip is too big.  If you are unsure which grip size to choose, choose the smaller grip, you can always build it up.

In summary, if you have shorter strokes and rely on placement to win matches, you should look for a lighter, oversize racquet.  If you have long, fast strokes, you should look for a heavier, midsized racquet.  That said, if you are looking for a new racquet, I strongly urge you to try a demo from the Western pro shop.  We carry the very popular line of Babolat racquets.  We have over 20 racquets to choose from, ranging from the light Y 118, to the heavier Pure Storm. If you are looking for a nice blend of power and control you will definitely want to try the Pure Drive.  As always, do not hesitate to ask any of the Western tennis staff if you have any questions regarding racquets.

Chilling 'n Grilling
If you missed Deb Guenterberg's presentation on planning a picnic, here are a few food safety tips that you can utilize over the rest of your summer.
When grilling...

o    Remember to clean the grill off with hot, soapy water each time before use    (especially if at a public campground or park)
o   If using a marinade, be sure to marinate in the refrigerator and not on the counter.   If the marinade is used on raw meat and is to be reused, make sure it comes to a boil first to destroy any harmful bacteria.
o   You can microwave defrost if the food will be placed immediately on the grill.  Otherwise, use the refrigerator to completely thaw out meats.
o   Do you have a food thermometer?  Safe minimum internal temperatures are as follows:
o    Whole poultry, breasts, or ground poultry 165* F,
o    Hamburgers, beef 160*F
o    Beef, veal, and Lamb   Medium Rare 145*F      Medium 160*F
o   All cuts of pork 160*F
When chilling...
o    Keep meat and poultry refrigerated until ready to use if grilling at home.
o    On the go? Pack a cooler with enough ice to keep the food at 40*F or below.
o    After eating, always refrigerate perishable food within 2 hours and within 1 hour if temperature is above 90*F.
o    Serve small quantities of dips/salad dressings, because you will need to switch them out after 2 hours.  (Place them on ice to keep them chilled).
