| Greetings! | |
In July we celebrate our country's independence. We fought hard, lost some battles, but eventually, we won the war.
It's kind of like our journey towards a healthier lifestyle. We commit ourselves to making good choices, so that hopefully we will be able to live a life that is free from chronic illness and pain; A life that allows us to live independently for as long as possible; A life that is filled with new experiences that help us learn and grow. There are days that we do everything right. Good food. Great exercise. Lots of water and sleep. We win the battle. Then there are the other days. These days, (and everyone has them) our discipline breaks down and we fail to follow the plan. That's Ok. But when these days start to outnumber the others, we need to find the strength to re-commit ourselves.
So let's make July the month that we re-evaluate our wellness plan. With one month of summer under our belt, we may already see evidence that mowing the lawn or biking with the kids just isn't giving us what we need to continue the fight.
I invite you to come back to the club and create a new marching order. Take a new group exercise class, workout with a Personal Trainer or pick up a racquet. You'll be back on track with a new plan that just might help you win the war.
Have a great July!
Susan Peltier General Manager
The club will be closed on Sunday, July 4th, reopening for regular hours on Monday, July 5th! |
| Member of the Month - Paula Kichner | |
One of our most avid group fitness class fans, Paula's upbeat personality is reflected in the class choices she makes. Her preference for high intensity classes that promote camaraderie between participants and instructors are her favorites. She loves the variety of classes offered and the nuances that each instructor brings to their craft.
Paula is employed at PMI, one of our Corporate Wellness partners. Since partnering with Western in 2008, PMI has taken a pro-active approach to the health of their employees by offering them various rewards for participating in exercise & nutrition programs. PMI's close proximity allows Paula to work out an average of 5 times a week, helping her relieve stress and get a better night's sleep.
A naturally outgoing person, Paula appreciates the social activities available at the club. Wine & Cheese Tasting nights, "Bring a Guest" welcome parties and Lunch & Learn lectures give her an opportunity to meet new and interesting people.
Paula's mission is to be in the best possible physical condition through a vaaiety of classes in a fun, social setting...Just wait until she sees what we have up our sleeve for Fall! |

Tennis Tip of the Month
Proper Volley Footwork
by Jon Schaff, Racquet Sports Director
I hope you are enjoying watching Wimbledon. It is my favorite slam to watch. I love the two-toned grass courts and the cozy atmosphere of the All England Club. But most of all, I like how the court surface, grass being very fast, allows the players to get to the net more often to hit their volleys.
All great volleyers have superior footwork at the net. Most of us do not use the proper footwork at the net, but footwork is the most important part of the volley. I am sure all of us have had an easy sitter at the net, our eyes get big, when begin to salivate, and then we take a huge swing and send the ball directly into the back curtain. Oops. I agree it does feel really good to rip the ball, but it does not win many points at the net. Here are some tips to help with power and control on volleys.
Lock it and leave it. What this means is, while you are at the net, as soon as you see the ball coming to you, move your racquet from its ready position to right behind the path of the ball, keeping the racquet always between you and the net. Visualize how you would catch a ball. You would reach forward extending your hand to the ball as it comes to you. This should be the same type motion for your volley preparation. Once your racquet is prepared out in front of you, lock and leave it in that position. DO NOT SWING.
To it and through it. Now that your racquet is doing the proper non-swinging stroke, you need to add power. Just like you accelerate your racquet through contact on a serve, you want to accelerate your racquet as you make contact with your volley. Power will come from your body moving forward as you make contact. So, with your just locked your racquet in place, cross step to the volley, make contact, then keep moving through the volley. You should take a minimum of 2 steps to it and through it on every volley.
To hit perfect volleys, lock and leave your racquet in front of you as your legs push you and the racquet to it and through it.
Next month - What is the best racquet for me? |

A Message for "I Lost it at the Club" Participants | |
It has been 6 months since we ran the program and Kat's curiosity has the best of her.
So, please help put her curiousity to rest and answer the following questions:
-
Have you maintained, lost or gained weight since your final weigh-in?
-
What exercise have you been getting this summer?
-
Have you continued any of the activities (food journaling, daily exercise etc.) that helped you lose weight during the program?
Your responses will help us design a better program that supports your goal of a healthier lifestyle. Please respond to Kathleen.vanfossen@westernracquet.com. Thank you! |
| A Friendly Reminder from Susan | | We provide towels, hair dryers and sundries as amenities to our members. This means that these items are provided for your use while in the club. Recently, we have lost a surprising number of items and the cost of continual replacement has forced us to re-consider supplying some of these things. Please be considerate of other members and return towels to the bins before leaving. Hairdryers must be left in the locker rooms. Products such as lotions, cosmetic supplies and hygiene products are provided as a convenience, not as a supply source. Please help us make your experience at WR&FC the best it can be. Thank you! |
