| Greetings! | |
May marks the official kick-off of the partnership between Western Racquet & Fitness Club and Prevea Health. This exciting partnership has already delivered some wonderful benefits to Western members, including the "Spring IN2 Action" nutrition program and a informational kiosk in the club entrance highlighting community wellness events and healthcare resources.
As we look forward to the balance of 2010 and beyond, we are thrilled at the possibilities we now have to provide to you. We are planning on expanding club programs like "Spring IN2 Action" in an effort to become a better resource for you as you pursue a healthier life. An educational "Lunch & Learn" lecture series is being developed using Western & Prevea experts, discussing topics you have suggested. We are adding group exercise classes later in the evening PLUS on the weekend. With over 52 classes to choose from, there is every type of class from Women's Wellness, to Zumba, to yoga, and more!
So, you see why we're excited about this new partnership. I hope you share in that feeling and are looking forward to all that this partnership will offer you.
Be Well,
Susan Peltier

| Members of the Month - Tips from ILIATC Big Winners | |
Mike Liebman decided that reducing his monthly dues by $1 for every pound he lost, combined with the challenge of a contest, appealed to his "stubborn streak."
With a weight loss of 28 lbs, Mike came in 1st in the "Men Over 50 Division" of the "I Lost it at the Club" program. He credits a large part of his success to his wife, Linda, who joined him in the challenge. By working out together and cooking healthier meals, they created a new lifestyle that Mike feels will help him keep the weight off. Congratulations to you both!
Mary Jo Ross believes "timing is everything". For her, ILIATC arrived at the perfect moment. Once the holidays were over, the weekly weigh-ins provided the accountability she was looking for. That, in conjunction with her tennis regiment and personal training schedule, helped her lose over 10 lbs.
We look forward to offering "I Lost it at the Club" again next year and hope that these success stories encourage you to take your health and wellness routine to the next level. |

Tennis Tip of the Month How to Play Outdoor Tennis by Jon Schaff, Racquet Sports Director
Finally the snow is gone! I hope I didn't just jinx it and the weather continues to be nice enough to also play outdoors. The wind, sun, temperature, humidity and court surface will affect the pace and bounce of the ball. Here are a few tips on how to deal with the outdoor conditions.
Adjust your game plan depending on the wind. Even a slight breeze we affect the ball, so make sure during your warm-up that you recognize which way the wind is blowing. If the wind is at your back, you should stand closer to the baseline for your ground strokes. You will also want to go to the net more often as your opponent's shots will tend to float up into the wind. If the wind is in your face, hit it harder and higher. It is hard to hit the ball long into the wind so be more aggressive. If there is a cross wind aim more down the center. This way the wind will help push the ball into the corner.
My mother always said, "Don't look directly into the sun." This is tricky when your opponent throws up a lob right in front of this big ball of fire. Try using your free hand to block the sun. It may also be a good idea to let this ball bounce and then take it as an overhead. If the sun is right were you toss for your flat serve, experiment with different toss positions. You might need to lower it or only hit slice serves.
Lastly, be patient. The warm temperature, wind, humidity, and dust on the court surface will all slow the ball down. A typical indoor winner will probably come back when you are outside. So work on constructing points, move your opponent(s) around and create an opening before you strike.
Have a fantastic May and see you at the courts!
