Greetings!
Everybody has spring fever! With this great season being so short, I think we should make a plan to take advantage of what spring has to offer.

· Get moving. Bike, hike, walk, kayak, canoe, and swim. A minimum should be 30 minutes a day & don't forget the sunscreen!
· Get shopping. Farmers Markets will soon be in full swing. Why would you be shopping anywhere else? These markets not only offer locally produced fruits & veggies but also meat, poultry, wine and flowers for your table. Grab a friend and make it a date.
· Get cooking. Lighten your load by trying out new recipes for salads, grilled fish, and meats. Test out new spices or marinades that give you great flavor with less salt and fat.
· Get social. This is the time for re-connecting with friends and family. Don't let your busy schedule get in the way of the good stuff!

Have a great spring!

Members of the Month - Tips from ILIATC Big Winners
Eric Vorpahl
The overall winner of the "I Lost it at the Club" program with 46.2 lbs. lost, Eric was feeling very unhealthy just a short time ago. The father of one with another on the way, he decided he wanted to be able to  be active with both children. Through daily food journaling, which Eric says is "imperative," he began to learn how to make better food choices. That breakthrough, combined with daily exercise made him our own "Biggest Loser." Congratulations!

Anne Nackers
Anne lost 19.6 lbs. by learning about portion control. Following the suggestion to "eat half as much, twice as often" Anne found she didn't have to give up much of anything to start seeing progress. Anne had other good suggestions, such as 1) when dining out, ask for a "to go" box as soon as your food arrives to save half of the portion for a later time and 2) if you cut your daily exercise short, make that time up the next day. Anne is the model for "everything in moderation." Good Job!

Kathy Zeitler
Kathy lost 5.8% of her body weight, making her a winner in her age category. Battling bad knees, high blood pressure, and a the stress of owning her own business, Kathy decided to pay for a Western membership instead of paying for doctor visits and prescriptions. "We all deserve to take care of ourselves and on the days that we feel like a "total loser," we should remind ourselves that today is a new day." This positive attitude and the support of her family will help Kathy keep up the great work!

Ladies Combo Tennis Teams Win NE Wisconsin Local League
Congratulations to our 3 ladies combo tennis teams for a great job winning their NE WI local league.  Jill Frenette's 7.5 combo team took second place in the State Tournament with a 3-1 record over the three day event, just missing a shot at the regional tournament.  Sue Strand's 6.5 team also participated at the State Tournament with a 1-1 record.  Sara Schubring's  8.5 combo team dominated their local league with a record of 6-2. Great job to all the ladies and we are looking forward to the 2010 USTA summer season!

Tennis Tip of the Month
Don't Become Over-Competitive
by Jon Schaff, Racquet Sports Director

I believe the best part of tennis is getting a great workout during a competitive game with my peers.  I have been competing in tennis matches for over 26 years and in my early days, I treated my opponent as my enemy.  Everything that my opponent did made me mad and I was consumed with beating this player.   I am glad to say I have matured (some might argue otherwise) and have learned to focus on the execution of my game plan.
We all play tennis because we like it.  We like being with our friends and getting some exercise.  But try not to become over-competitive.  Some examples of over-competitiveness would be as follows: yelling at yourself, banging your racquet, and hitting the balls into the back curtain - all of which, by the way, can be a point penalty in an officiated match.  This negativity will only lead to more frustration and the loss of more points.

I have a few options for you if you are feeling frustrated on the tennis court.  Be a good analyzer.  Replay the last point in your mind.  Did you lose because they hit an amazing winner?  If so, say "Wow, great shot!" Was it because your shot was too easy for them?  If so, you have multiple options in your bag of tricks.  Use the 3 SPs (March's Tip of the Month) to change your previous shot.  If you have a solution to the situation, you should feel confident the next time that situation arises.  Another option that I like to use is having a song in my head.  It usually ends up being the last song I heard on the radio on my way to work, but use an upbeat tune that keeps you motivated.  This helps with controlling the breathing, keeps the feet moving to the beat and gives the mind something to do other than getting upset about your performance.
Stay competitive and try to win every match, but if you are down on yourself, try a recording of "My Sharona" and let me know if it works for you.
