| Greetings! |
|
As we begin March, I find myself looking forward to spring. The gray skies and snow take their toll on the body & the mind and I am anxious for a fresh change!
There are a few new things happening at Western. First, several of our members have shed some pounds since the beginning of "I Lost it at the Club". The great participation in this program showed us that many of you are interested in a structured plan to continue to improve your health. So, in April, we are introducing a nutrition-based program called "Spring into Action". Debbie Geutenberg, R.D., will be helping us understand what good nutrition really means. Please watch for details to be posted around the club and in April's newsletter.
Second, Four Seasons Tennis Club has a new bar and grill called Take 5. Doug Mielke, a fellow member, is serving your favorite beverages, along with soups, sandwiches and snacks. Hours are Monday-Saturday 11 a.m. to close. Stop by and sample the hospitality!
Finally, we have many new members who have joined the club in the last couple months. You have done a great job making them feel welcome. We will be adding later classes to the group fitness schedule to accommodate varying schedules and additional participants.
So, I guess I don't have to wait for spring to arrive to see some change. I just need to look around Western! See you at the club!
Sincerely,
Susan Peltier

| Member of the Month - Steve Salamone |
|
This month, we pay tribute to Steve Salamone. An avid racquetball player since he was 15, Steve has a passion for the game that he has to share.
Steve has spearheaded Western's junior racquetball program for eight years, donating his Saturday mornings to conduct clinics. With the help of his sons, Danny & Joey, Steve has launched students into tournament competition on both the state and national levels, resulting in several state junior champions, including his two sons.
This month marks the eighth year that Steve will be organizing the Brian Hermans Memorial Racquetball Tournament. To date, this tournament has raised over $24,000 for various charities, including the Boys & Girls Club of Green Bay. It has become Western's biggest racquetball tournament of the year and Steve's proudest accomplishment. This year's tournament will be held on Saturday, March 27th.
Our thanks go out to the Salamone family for their contributions to the club. We appreciate all that they have done and continue to do to make Western a great place to play. |

Tennis Tip of the Month
The 3 SP's by Jon Schaff, Racquet Sports Director
Every match has its own challenges. You always need to pay attention to what your opponent's game plan is, while trying to execute your own. Sometimes, you might be in the perfect position and they still find a way to hit a winner. After you say "great shot," reconstruct the point, and try to figure out how they were able to burn you, chances are your previous shot was too easy for them.
There are 3 ways to change your previous shot and they all start with 'SP.' The first is SPOT. This is referring to the spot where your last shot landed. If it was short, near the service line, it means your opponent was able to step into the court and give you less time to react. Was your spot to their stronger side? Try to avoid their stronger wing and pick on their weaker side.
The second 'SP' is SPEED. Faster does not always mean better. Some players overhit the no-pace ball, so slower might be a good idea. On the other hand, players with gigantic backswings do not have time to take that big stoke on a ball that is much faster, so accelerate your swing against those opponents.
SPIN is the third way to change your shot. Backspin keeps the ball low, forcing your opponent to bend and hit it up to you. Topspin balls kick up at your opponent giving the ball a quick hop that gets above their strike zone. Topspin is also a very effective tool to make the ball dip down at your opponent's feet so they cannot put away a volley.
If your opponent hits a winner, decide if it was just their miraculous shot or if your last ball right was where they like it. Next time you are in that situation, change your SPEED, SPOT or SPIN and they will be flustered by your variety. |
