enjoyed a couple of days off for some down time, good food, quality family time and were back to work as quick as we left. We had a pretty good 2011 and are hoping to make 2012 even better to help Wood-N-Whimsies grow. We think that it is our, what we believe to be, great customer service for the secret to our success.
If we flub it up, then we will fix it. When the mistake is the customers, we'll do our best to help them get what they want.
Tracey and I will be in Kansas City, actually Overland Park, Kansas from the 27 until the 29th of January to attend the Woodworking Show. We make this a little weekend getaway mixed with some business each year. We will be back at work on Monday the 30th for business as usual. Ryan and Pam will take care of the internet orders that come in on Friday, but if you need to reach us by phone, you can give us a call back on Monday.
If you have an opportunity to go to one of the Woodworking Shows in your area, it is definitely worth the $12.00 ticket price for admission. Take money with you, there are some really great deals available at the show. To avoid standing in line, you can purchase advance tickets on-line at the link above.

TECH TALK

Every one of the Propelling Pencil Mechanisms in the kits you sent me are bad!!! We get this complaint quite alot from first time pen/pencil makers. There are very few reasons for the mechanisms to act up but the biggest reason is unfamiliarity with the product and how to properly operate it. It is not at all uncommon for the lead which is pre-loaded in the mechanism to be broken. These kits are handled and re-handled before being loaded on a ship and then re-handled again and again and again from the time they arrive at port in Long Beach, CA until they are in your trusty hands, ready to be turned and assembled. (Just imagine the train and truck rides they get to go on!) I can absolutely guarantee you that the only people who gave any care or concern for the safe and careful handling of the load were us here at Wood-N-Whimsies and the folks who initially packed the order at the manufacturer. Does anyone still wonder how that massively huge .7mm pencil lead got broken? Broken lead is usually the culprit as to why the mechanism will not work. Ryan and I have put together another little video short on how to properly clean out and reload the mechanism with good lead. Keep in mind, if you drop the finished pencil or just the mechanism, you probably broke the lead and it will need to be reloaded. In the ten years we have been selling these pencils, I have only came across two mechanisms that were actually defective in some real way. Many of them have been replaced and returned at Wood-N-Whimsies expense only to find that there was actually nothing wrong except that they were being improperly operated and loaded. Never disassemble the mechanism, there are some very small parts which will fall out and you will never get them back in properly. Namely a very tiny, minutely small "O" ring. It will not come out unless you unscrew the mechanism and disassemble it. The second reason for the mechanism getting jammed up is that the user is putting too much lead into the back of the pencil. This will definitely cause a jam up. The mechanism will try to propel more than one piece of lead at a time and things will be a mess with little tiny broken pieces. You will need to take a small gauge wire and insert it through the tip. Remove the cap and the eraser and insert the wire with the tip pointing up. You will see all sorts of little lead crumbles dropping through. Do not force the wire through, you can dislodge the keeper O-ring and then your mechanism will no longer work. Another reason why the mechanism will not operate properly, believe it or not, is that the user is trying to load it with .5mm lead instead of .7mm lead. I really have no idea why, but the .5mm lead just won't stay in place when you try to write with it, it just keeps sliding back up inside the mechanism. Hmmmm, you gotta wonder sometimes. I have had bunches of mechanisms returned which are loaded with .5mm lead. The customer says that it used to work great until they started having to load new lead in it and swears up and down that they just know that the lead they are loading is absolutely correct. Click the You Tube Link to go to the video:
As far as twist mechanisms in pencil kits, That's another story. Those things are very temperamental and I do not know much about their inner workings. Call Penn State and ask them if you have a problem. I don't work with them enough to figure out their temperaments. The 30.06 cartridge pencil used in the video has over seven years of patina on it and has had dozens of lead pieces put through it. I use it quite extensively and some folks would say it has seen better days. I guess in the long run you could say that I got my moneys worth from it. It still works very well so I can't say that I'll be getting rid of it anytime soon. I think the patina gives it a lot of "character" and it would be a shame to polish it off.

| WHAT'S NEW |
 | Rope Blank On A Bright
Chrome Comfort Kit.
|
The Rope Blank at left is one of my own new creations. The blanks are made from the jacket of a kernmantle rope stretched over a 7mm tube and then encased in clear polyester resin. The result is absolutely stunning. They can be turned with almost any reasonably sized kit which uses 7mm tubes. The blanks are 2-1/8" by about 5/8". Super Majesty Boronic Hugenormous Mega Kits are too big and the blank will not work. Some blanks are a bit larger and some are just slightly smaller. In any case they will fit any Slimline or Comfort kit with lots of room to spare. The blanks are $5.49 each or 2+ at $4.75 each. You will need to purchase two blanks to make the pen as shown. Some folks only want to embellish one of the blanks or use them for a keychain, this is why we split them out instead of charging for a 5" blank want it all or not. I'll be making some more colors and sizes later. Tracey has created another Inlay Blank for her Silhouette Series. This one is a

Silhouette Skier On A Chrome Monet.
| snow skier made to fit any Monet, Sierra, Mesa, Gatsby, Wall Street or similar kit. It is dyed black maple inlaid into a piece of curly maple. We have some new black powder coated tubes for use with the inlay blanks. No more shiny brass peaking through to mess things up. Just assemble the blank onto one of these tubes and you're all set. The Monet Pen Kit is now available in all chrome. This is a fabulous looking pen. We have a couple of the inlay blanks made up on this kit. Just go to the Inlay Blank page to see them put together. The 27/64" tube which fits the Monet/Gatsby/Sierra type kits is now available in 10" lengths. The tubes are sold in packs of six and are great for creating custom blanks like the Rope Blank above. The breast Cancer Ribbon clip is in. Oh yeh, very nice clip .

COMING SOON
| The Yoyo Kit made here is turned from some nice new polyester resin blanks from Uncle Tim. We will have them on the site very soon. As soon as the Yoyo Kits come in from PSI Woodworking. Tim has made them in several colors and is always ready to make something up custom for you. We don't have too many yoyo making customers but enough to offer them something special. The blanks are 2-1/2" in diameter and about 5/8" thick in a set of two. Plenty of material for a nice turning. Each blank set comes with two matching polyester resin cabochons for the crafty turner who chooses to do their own thing and make them without the standard kit. We will only have a few available ready for sale but Tim can make them up in a couple of days if you need more than we have in stock, just give us a call for your special needs.
