Greetings!

Dink says, "It's good to have friends, especially in the winter and early spring".

It's March and the spring craft shows are coming fast and furious. This is another time of year when we begin to run out of several popular items. We are already out of some items but expect them in later this month.

The projected date is March 25th. We had over expected sales numbers after Christmas and thought we ordered with plenty of time before stock ran out, but not so.   It can be very difficult to know what is going to be the next hot item. Please check our site regularly for your turning needs. If we are out of what you need, we sincerely apologize and as we get more experienced we hope to avoid "out of stock" situations as much as possible.

If you do not find what you need on our website, please give us a call and we will check to see if we have it in stock. There are many items that we carry which are not listed on our site. Tracey only likes to post items we have ample stock of on the site to avoid someone being disappointed if they order something and then we don't have it.   If it isn't something that sells quite a bit then we will only keep a few on hand at a time.

We have had a few folks offer to help us out in expanding our inventory in the recent past in both larger turning stock, pen blanks and other gizmo's and doohickeys. Please understand before you approach us with an offer to carry your special blanks or products that we cannot pay retail and then turn around and sell them at retail price. If the product does not pay for itself in what it occupies in shelf  space, website space ,employee handling time and of course Uncle Sam's hefty chunk, then we cannot afford to sell it and keep our dogs in kibble!  We try to keep our costs as low as possible so we can offer goods to our customers at a reasonable price. Forty and Fifty dollars for a pen blank is not reasonable in my book, no matter how great the blank looks. Chances are the turner will not recoup their expenses. There is a huge difference between a profit and a profit margin. Businesses work on profit margins. In other words, what is left over after all the bills are settled up and the employees  and taxes are paid is the margin.  This is what you get to either take home or choose to reinvest to expand inventory in a business.

Whoever said that when you run a retail website, you just sit back and let the checks roll in has never really been there to run a successful retail business.  Tracey and I can personally affirm  after an eighteen to twenty hour day that it just does not work that way.

Tracey's Two Cents Worth:

How our business is set up.

Just wanted to clarify that we do not have what would be considered a brick and mortar setup.  This means we don't have an official retail location manned with someone at the phone 100% of our business hours.

While we always welcome folks who might want to see something before they buy and people who prefer to call us with their orders we are set up as an internet business.   We made this decision because many of the things Tim and I do require that we are out in the workshop trimming brass, cutting wood etc.

We will update our phone message if we are going to be away for the day picking up supplies and I will generally post an away mail if I'm going to be out of town.

If you get our answering machine feel confident in leaving a message.  Tim is awesome about returning calls in a very timely manner.    We have had a few folks who have given us an ear full because they will call and just happen to miss us, we may come back in the office and then run back out to the workshop and they may just happen to call again.  In their mind, we "never" answer our phone and it's always those folks who will jump on the forums and start making those absolute statements.  I've seen it happen to lots of businesses.   In fact, if they had just left a quick message they would have probably received a call back within 15 minutes unless we were gone for the day.

Emails are usually answered within 24 hours unless they come in over the weekend.  We are closed on Saturdays so Sundays  are very busy so it may be Monday before we can get back to you.   There are times when during the busy season when I cannot respond to emails for 48 hours but I do try to get you a quick response.

I hope this clears things up for some of you that may have been wondering how we operate and help explain that we do value each and every customer.

TECH TALK

What is turning between centers, and what will this do for me? Turning between centers is basically turning your pen blanks without the use of a mandrel. This is in my opinion, the most accurate  and precise way of turning larger blanks.

So often when a larger blank is turned on a mandrel, it will end up out of round. This is very frustrating since quite often we end up paying a premium price for special blanks to make our projects into higher end sales items. The reason it ends up out of round has several causes. One or all may be the culprit but it is hard to tell while the lathe is spinning. You just have to pay real close attention to the details.       The first reason for the egg shaped blank is that you are turning the blank too fast and the shear weight of the blank is causing what is known as "whip". Whip is when the mandrel is so stressed by excessive speed that is actually bending, or warping out. This bending and warping can also cause your mandrel to become permanently bent.

The second reason is that the keeper nut on the mandrel is overtightened and you are causing the mandrel to bend or warp.

Another reason is that the live center is either not tight enough to firmly secure the mandrel.  Or the live center is too tight and again actually bending the mandrel.

Whatever the reason is, these problems can all be eliminated by using a method called "turning between centers".

There are a few simple tools you will need to get started. You will need a set of bushings for your project kit, a dead center, and a live center. With your bushing set inserted into the ends of the blank, install this assembly between the dead center and the live center and turn as if your blank was on a mandrel. The disadvantage of turning this way is that you will not be able to install both blanks on the lathe to turn at the same time. This overextended length is the primary cause for whip and egg shaped blanks anyway.

Mount the dead center into the head stock of your lathe. Just sock it in there good and tight. Some dead  centers come with a long bolt which extends through the headstock to hold it securely in place. This elaborate setup is not necessary. Just a plain dead center from Grizzly will work just fine. Go to Grizzly.com and order an H7966 for a #1MT or H7967 for a #2 MT. The cost is around $10.00 plus shipping. I have ordered many times from Grizzly and I get the goods in just a few short days. With the release of this newsletter their will quite possibly be a run on dead centers at Grizzly so you may want to be quick before they run out of stock. We do have a Grizzly store in Springfield but quite often the shipping cost is less than the gas and wear on the car.

This setup will completely eliminate the possibility of ending up with egg or oval shaped blanks. There are special bushings you can buy which are specifically made for turning between centers but I just use the regular $3.00 to $5.00 set and have no problems.

As for slimline and Comfort kits you will have to get yourself a set of special made bushings since the standard 7mm bushing does not secure inside the tube to keep it in line. We are currently working with a tooling company in Taiwan to get these bushings made at a reasonable $3.00 cost. In the mean time you can make bushings from plastic or nylon which will work just fine.  Wood is too soft and acrylic is too brittle and will break from the force applied by the tail stock necessary to keep the blank from spinning. The homemade bushings will only require a bit of your time to get them right.  Here is a link to a You Tube video which  shows the procedure:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6wTnychR1U&feature=related

Like I said, you can use the standard bushings and they work just fine. If you think they are too loose then you can fix this little problem by slipping in a piece of paper to fill the gap and tighten up the bushing in the tube; I have never had this problem though.

I use a triple bearing long nose live center from Grizzly with a 60 degree point and have excellent results. I turn my blanks round with a roughing gouge and finish with a skew. This way I have fewer catches by riding the bevel of the tools. I seldom get blowouts when I use these chisels, just remember to keep them sharp. A dull skew will make your turning experience more than miserable in a  big hurry.

After turning with a skew, there is seldom any need to perform any sanding to smooth the blank. The skew leaves a very smooth surface on the blank which is ready for polishing.

WHAT'S NEW

We are starting to carry a few larger turning blanks in both domestic and exotic species. As we move forward we will expand our inventory as more and more woods come available. Look for spindle and bowl blanks on our site.

COMING SOON

The Hollow Fast H750 Articulating Arm Hollowing System will soon be available at Wood-N-Whimsies. We will include a carbide cutting tip with the system, a $55.00 value, at no extra charge. We will also carry the Laser Wall Thickness Gauge as an add on to the system.

The cost of the system which includes: H750 arm, the tail stock or post mount , the holder clamp, a 6mm scraper carbide cutter holder, a carbide scraper cutter kit and a high speed steel basic cutter will be $199.99. The laser wall thickness gauge add on will be moderately priced at $119.99.

The system will be available in two ways. One set-up is for the turners with smaller mini and midi lathes with a post mount. This set-up will accommodate lathes with turning radiuses up to seven inches.  In other words, a 14 inch lathe. The other set-up will accommodate larger lathes. The Hollow Fast arm mounts into the tailstock. Here is a link to a YouTube video where Dave Hout demonstrates the set-up procedure.

I saw this tool being demonstrated at the Woodworking show last month in Overland Park, Kansas. I was given the opportunity to play with it by the vendor and I must say, I was sold instantly. I own and use the Jameson System and personally I find the Hollow Fast a much easier system to use both in set-up and ease of use. There is little to no chatter and the vibration applied to the laser is all but gone.

Tracey has been busy at the laser again and has come up with a Fleur-De-Lis. It will be available with an osage orange design on a black dyed maple blank. In other words it will be yellow on black. We will have it for sale on the website as soon as the final tweaking is complete. If you would like the blank made with other colors please send us an email or attach a comment to your order. There  will be an extra charge for premium woods.
