Last Minute Blues & Boos Hoos
Greetings! As we get further into the fall craft season and closer to Christmas we get busier and busier here at Wood-N-Whimsies. We also have a tendency to run out of supplies a little more often. Whether you make your purchase from us or from another vendor, please do not wait until the last minute to order something you know you will need at your next show. It's almost a guarantee that the one item you need the most will be out of stock by everyone everywhere if you put off ordering until the eleventh hour. We never know what the next hot item is going to be. We try to plan ahead with our stock requirements to meet the trending needs of our customers. Every once in a while we get it wrong and we don't have enough Johnstonian Fidgy Widgets to go around. A Johnstonian Fidgy Widget is an item that nobody thought they needed but everyone suddenly wants. Please Note: We will be out of town from October 14th until late on the evening of October 17th to attend a family marriage ceremony and ride motorcycles through the Davis Mountains. Please have your orders in by 10:00 PM Central time on the 13th to make it out in the mail on the 14th. Any order we receive after this time will be sent out Monday October 18th. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. |

INLAY BLANKS ARE A BIG HIT, WHAT ABOUT CUSTOM WORK?
Tracey has been putting the laser to work and has come up with some really nice inlay blanks. We have been getting some requests for custom work in this area in not only modifying colors of the current designs but also in designing custom layouts. The cost for proprietary custom design work is $400.00 for the initial research and development and depending on the complexity of the design the cost per blank could be anywhere from $10.50 to $35.00 per blank with a 100 blank minimum purchase. We will not copy the designs of other inlay blanks on the market which are manufactured by someone else. If you want something that already exists on the market then you need to deal with the original designer/manufacturer. A lot of time, effort, trial, and error go into designing these blanks, this is why they are so costly. Not to mention that the blanks have to be drilled and turned before they go to the laser for cutting. If we feel that the design is something we can sell to other customers and you are willing to release the sole proprietorship of the design, then we can forgo the $400.00 design fee and sell the blanks as our own. Final Determination of the fee application is the decision of Tracey and is not negotiable. She is the one who puts in the hours and hours of work on these blanks and has the final say. We will not produce blanks which infringe on copy rights. An example of this is making a blank with an NFL team logo. We have been repeatedly asked to do this which is a big no-no unless you can obtain a written legal document allowing re-production. If you want custom colors of blanks which we already make then the cost could vary depending on the cost of the material to produce the blank. We will require a 100 blank minimum purchase. There is an additional $150.00 cost if you want the colors to be proprietary and only sold to you. While we are making a range of skill level inlays, they are generally not for novice turners and should be turned using a skew in the traditional manner and not as a scraper. Ride the bevel and make thin shearing cuts for best results. If you roll the chisel over and scrape the wood off, you will most likely blow out the blank. Do not trim your inlay blanks with a Pen Mill, this is asking for disaster right from the start. Instead, use a universal squaring jig.

Coming Soon
Tracey has several new inlay blanks in the paper phase of creation. Check the site often to see what she has come up with next. I am currently working on a bullet tip for the 3006 pen which looks like a real bullet instead of the standard slimline pen tip. We have been told of folks having their pens confiscated at airport security here in the US when the pen is made with an actual bullet tip. I was told of a group of US soldiers coming back from Iraq that had their pens confiscated. This is unfortunate but a fact of life in this day and age. If you are planning on making one of these pens for a soldier or sailor you know, please do not send it to them overseas. Hold onto it and give it to them when they return. It would be a shame to have such a nice gift wind up in an airport trash receptacle.
