New Driving Laws
** Effective October 1st **
Cell Phone Usage and Driving

The State of Maryland has passed a new law effective October 1, 2010 restricting usage of a cell phone while driving to "hands free only."   First time offenders will be fined $40, and the violation would only be enforced if the driver is pulled over for a different driving infraction.   However, Maryland's law on texting while driving is much more strict; no other violation is required before you can be pulled over, and that single violation can cost a whopping $500!

Many states have already banned the use of cell phones and texting while driving, and many are getting on board quickly.  If you are not a Maryland resident or driving through Maryland, check with you state for their specific laws to keep you out of trouble.  Our position has always been SAFETY FIRST!   So, don't answer that call unless you are hands free!

Move Over law
Another new law that was also effective October 1st is a law that requires a driver, who is approaching an emergency vehicle with it's lights on and on the side of the road, to make a lane change into an available lane not immediately adjacent to the emergency vehicle.  This movement should only be done if another lane in the same direction is available and the move can be made safely and without impeding other traffic. If moving to another lane away from the stopped emergency vehicle is not possible, the law requires drivers to 'slow to a reasonable and prudent speed that is safe for existing weather, road, and vehicular or pedestrian traffic conditions.'

The intention of the 'move over law' is to provide extra safety for police officers, emergency rescue personnel and firefighters working along Maryland roads.

"Violation of the 'move over' law is a primary offense with a fine of $110 and one point. If the violation contributes to a traffic crash, the fine is $150 and three points. If the violation contributes to a traffic crash resulting in death or serious injury, the fine is $750 and three points."

Wanna' Save Some Cash?
Money Doesn't grow on trees, so why not save some!
Here are a few ways you can save money on your insurance.

  • Raise your deductibles.  Having a deductible of $500 or $1000  instead of $250 can save you some real money.
  • Consolidate policies.  Some insurance companies offer multi-policy discounts for having both your home and auto policy with them.
  • Stick around!  The longer you are with an insurance carrier, the more "perks" you get, and the more you could save.
  • Review your policies annually.....Our agency may be able to help you make small changes that could make a big difference in your insurance premium.  (Even simple things like changing your payment plan could make a difference!)
  • Do your research before you buy.  Check for things like anti-lock brakes, alarm systems and airbags.  Certain devices like that can make a difference.

Balancing insurance coverage and insurance costs can be tricky, but that is what we do best.  Let us help you get the most out of YOUR insurance dollars!
Off-Road....Are you insured?
ATV
ATV, snowmobile, and dirt-bike riders...

  • Are you covered if you cause an accident?
  • Are you covered for theft or a run-in with and uninsured driver?
  • Are you complying with the law?
  • Do you have coverage for your accessories?

Most homeowners policies provide liability coverage only when a motorized all terrain vehicle is operated on the insured property and while it is used to service the property.  Specific insurance coverage can be purchased to insure the off road vehicle(s) if you operate it off the insured premises; offering liability coverage, physical damage coverage on the vehicle itself, and coverage for accessories as well.  If driven on the roads, liability coverage is mandatory in most states.  Check with your state's laws to make sure you are in compliance. (FYI:  The cost of an average policy is approximately  $200.)

  • Seasonal Safety Tips

Please stay safe, and keep the following tips in mind...

*Now is a great time to have those fireplaces cleaned and inspected......

-Don't forget:  Burn only seasoned (6 mo - 1 year)  hard woods

-Keep combustibles away from the hearth

    -Never leave a fire unattended

*Driving conditions get very dangerous this time of year, and claims go up.

-Be aware:  Wet leaves on wet roads

-Deer / Hunting season-  Dusk to Dawn

-Trick or Treats bring out the little goblins

-Temperature Changes can splinter that tiny windshield ding

-Back to School:  Watch out for the buses and school children

-Teenagers Beware:  Inexperienced drivers with friends in the car can become a deadly combination.  Stay Focused!!!

*Hard Economic Times can cause Crime to rise.

-Make sure to lock your car doors and your homes.

-Remove Items from your car that could be "marketable" to a thief.

-Keep bicycles and other valuables stored in locked garages

-Become involved in your "neighborhood watch"

*Shorter days can mean longer evenings at home, don't fall into the couch potato rut.

-Make your evenings count and get your finances and life in order!   Here is a great drill that my husband and I have used personally.  (After we first did this, we became very aware of how serious it can be....now we do a surprise drill without notice!) Here is how it works:

Come home from work one day, and say to your spouse or significant other:   "I died today......do you know what  you will need to do?  Do you know who to call?   Do you have enough life insurance, do you have a will - is it up to date?

Do you know passwords and where to locate important documents and records?  This is truly as important as a fire drill!   It is an eye opener!

                                     Good Luck.

As always,Thank you for your continued business!

    Sincerely,

    Your Friendly Agents at
