Project Homeless Connect is seeking volunteers!

Thank you to everyone who attended our 2012 Annual Meeting/Sleep Apnea Symposium. As a member benefit, OAGD was able to offer this lecture for free to OAGD members. Due to it success, we will do it again next year! However, it was brought to our attention that the event date conflicted with a major Jewish holiday. OAGD apologizes for this unintentional error and we will be conscious of this when selecting next year's event date. |

| OAGD Pledge Integral to Future Dental CE Opportunities
By Scott Hansen, DMD, FAGD
 | |
Dr. Scott Hansen, OAGD board member, presents Dr. Jack Ferracane with a donation check to the new OHSU dental school during the 2011 OAGD Annual Meeting.
|
Oregon AGD has successfully offered many great participation study clubs over the past 40+ years at the dental school in Portland. Because of our close working relationship with the school, we are the #1 user of their continuing education clinic. When we first learned that the new dental school was finally becoming a reality, the Oregon AGD Board of Directors immediately recognized the importance of preserving that vital link which allows us to fulfill our mission "to serve as the premier provider of professional development for Oregon dentists." We acted quickly to ensure we would not only continue to have a CE clinic to use but also ensure that AGD members would continue to have priority access to the new CE clinic. We announced at our recent Annual Meeting that the Oregon AGD has pledged a $250,000 donation to the school, over the next five years. OAGD is pleased to report after multiple conversations with Dean Jack Clinton that there will absolutely be a CE clinic at the new dental school available to our Oregon AGD members.

The new dental school tower, known as the Skourtes Tower, will house all clinical, research, and educational offerings beginning fall of 2014.

President's Article: "Tink, Tink, Tink... Continuing to Make a Difference in Oregon Dentistry"
|
By Aaron Tinkle, DMD
If you have been a dentist in Oregon for a while, you might recognize my last name. In 2006 I became the third Tinkle to graduate from OHSU School of Dentistry. My grandfather graduated from OHSU when the current school was brand-new and went on to have a successful practice in NE Portland, while still finding time to serve as the board president for Oregon AGD and the ODA. My uncle graduated in 1979 and loved the dental school so much that he stayed there to teach in the endo department for 30 years. I inherited high dental expectations from my family and both my uncle and grandfather taught me the importance of CE and organized dentistry.

Editor's Article: Pursuing Excellence and Doing Whatever It Takes
| |

Todd A. Gifford, DMD
-Recall Editor How far are you willing to go when you have a task to accomplish? Do you set out to just get it done to a minimally acceptable standard? Or do you pursue excellence? I believe one's answer to that question shapes one's destiny. It sets the stage for how one approaches life...with passion or indifference or somewhere in between. Furthermore, I believe it plays a significant role in establishing how many happy and fulfilling days one enjoys - and conversely, how many monotonous, sad or depressing days one experiences. As I consider the many facets of life, from marriage to parenting, from school to work to volunteerism, from being a friend to running a business, my answer to that question is always, "So long as it is ethical and just, I will do whatever it takes to achieve the best possible result I can." "You want the truth? You can't handle the truth!" But I'm hoping you can.
| |
Dr. Frank Caries
-occasional guest columnist
We live in a world that has rights and responsibilities. And those rights and responsibilities have to be tended to by men and women who will sacrifice some of their own time and interests to volunteer in a variety of organizations including professional associations, societies and academies. Those who volunteer have a greater responsibility than those who don't can possibly fathom.
Myth: I have children, so I can't volunteer. Fact: Most volunteers also have children, are good parents, and in fact are acting as positive role models for their children by volunteering. Balance is the key.
Myth: They must have a really slow dental practice that makes it possible to volunteer. Fact: They just play less golf, hunt less, fish less, take fewer vacations, you know...sacrifice some of their own interests for the greater good. Their dental practices are just as busy as yours...even busier.
Myth: Meetings are boring. I don't like them.

2011 Dentist of the Year: James A Smith, DMD
| |

After graduating from OHSU in 1981, James A. Smith served 24 years with the U.S. Navy Dental Corps before setting into life in Oregon, working for Permanente Dental Associates. While in the Navy, he earned a Master of Science degree in systems management from the University of Southern California and a certificate in comprehensive dentistry from the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, Maryland. During his 30 years of practicing general dentistry, Jim has achieved his Mastership from the Academy of General Dentistry, his Fellowship from the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the International College of Dentists and his Diplomate from the Federal Services Board of General Dentistry and the American Board of General Dentistry. Besides being an active member with the Oregon Academy of General Dentistry, Oregon Dental Association and the Multnomah Dental Society, he currently serves on the OHSU School of Dentistry Alumni Association Board of Directors. All these achievements and more made him the natural choice to receive the 2011 Dentist of the Year award from the Oregon AGD.

Speaker Spotlight

Speaker Spotlight:
Dr. James A. Miller of Hillsboro, Oregon
James Miller has been an AGD member for 30 years and in private practice since 1981. During his dental career, he has earned over 1,700 CE hours, helping him to achieve his fellowship in 1989 and his masters in 2005. Currently he is pursuing his Life Long Learning and Service Recognition Award from the AGDand his Diplomate status from the AAID. With his knowledge and experience, OAGD approached Dr. Miller about teaching a Connective Tissue Grafting course, which filled faster than any other course we offered last year. This year, Dr. Miller is back with another 4-day course (February 10-11 & March 9-10), which will still have his signature components that include a detailed and organized course taught with a passion for the topic, and the allowance for your assistants to be trained by Dr. Miller's assistant, Linda Geyer, on how they can assist you during these procedures. Interested in the course? Here's your chance to learn more about the instructor:

Random Thoughts from the Recall Editor

Wealth has a way of revealing how many needs you have that you previously thought were only wants.
Give a man a fish, and he'll be fed for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he'll take your fishing spot.
Logic adds an air of respectability to an argument that is otherwise fundamentally flawed.
You know it's time for a new dishwasher when the dishes come out dirtier than the food that's still on them.
When a 40-year-old hurts his wrist while playing volleyball, it doesn't mean he's getting old. It means he's still young enough to get a sports injury.
Most drivers believe red means "stop," green means "go," and yellow means "check your rearview mirror for a cop."
