M.O.M. Update: Not Enough Dentists on November 23rd

Dear AGD Members,

In our last newsletter OAGD announced our intention to volunteer as a group at the Mission of Mercy on November 23rd during the Noon to 6pm shift.  Thank you so much to the members who have already signed up to volunteer, however there are not enough general dentists scheduled yet on November 23rd to cover the anticipated number of people coming for dental care.

I am asking for your help. Any time you could give as a volunteer dentist would be much appreciated. There are plenty of other types of volunteers, just not enough dentists yet.

To verify that you are on the list of current volunteers, please visit this link. If you are not on this list and would like to volunteer, please contact Cindy Fletcher at cfletcher@oregondental.org as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Bruce Burton, DMD, MAGD, ABGD

President's Message: Unforeseen Benefits of Study Clubs
Scott HansenSince I graduated from dental school in '87, I have been actively involved in many study clubs.  Many have been through Oregon AGD, some have been through OHSU, and one has been a private "Gold Foil Study Club" (although it has turned into more of an operative study club) that I have been in my entire career.  I have found them all invaluable to my clinical skills, my professional friendships, and my love of dentistry.                      Read More...
Editor's Article: What's it like to be a recent grad? Still "Livin' the Dream."

I'm 38 years old.  As far back as I can remember, I have been blessed with a strong internal drive and a predisposition towards happiness.  I don't know from where it came.  But I do appreciate where it has taken me.  As a young student, I enjoyed doing homework.  Not always, but usually.  Later, as a soldier, I seemed to find ways to have fun despite performing sometimes miserable chores such as digging really deep foxholes (I am 6'6") and pulling all-night guard duty in the bitter cold.  My mantra to my fellow soldiers was "I'm livin' the dream."  That always got a good laugh.  My point.  No matter how bad the situation seemed, there was plenty for which I could be grateful.

Random Thoughts from the Recall Editor

Kindness to others is returned when we least expect it and often from someone else.

The Seven Wonders of the World:  to touch, to taste, to see, to hear, to run, to laugh and to love.

A synonym is a word you use when you can't spell the word you first thought of.

Success in American business is defined by profit.  Dentists have long been accused of being bad at business.  That's probably a good thing.  Otherwise, we might find them handing out candy and agreeing with patients that they don't really need to floss.

Elections are interesting.  Once the votes are tallied, 25% of eligible voters think the sky is falling because their candidate lost, 25% think it's the Second Coming because their candidate won, and the other half are apathetic because their candidate was not in the race.

Have a safe Winter Break, and Happy Holidays!
