Dance Conversations @ The Flea March 1st 2010
Thresh presented a work-in progress of Savitri: Journey in Eternal Night, new production for 2011.
Journey in Eternal Night is based on a canto from the epic poem, Savitri, written by the Indian mystic and freedom fighter Sri Aurobindo. This new work centers on a debate between a young mortal woman (Savitri) and the God of Death (Yama) who has come to take away her husband's soul. The language of theater is an interplay between traditional and contemporary Indian dance and music drawing an analogy between Yama (representing the norm of societal rules) and Savitri (representing the challenger to blind faith). The work highlights the importance of women's role in traditional societies where they represent fearless and progressive minds defying blind faith.
Journey in Eternal Night is a duet between a solo dancer and a vocalist each representing the body the voice of Savitri dialoguing with Death who is formless.
Initial funding for music composition was generously funded by American Music Center's Live Music for Dance.
