CHAVAGNES IN ROME : February 2012
Dear friends,

Chavagnes Choristers on a UK Tour

in summer 2009.

With a few important pieces of news, we hope you will excuse a new email from Chavagnes so soon after our Christmas and New Year bulletin.

Pope Benedict XVI has announced his intention to give the cardinals' hat to 22 new cardinals, including Archbishop Santos Abril y Castello, Archpriest of the Pontifical Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, on 19th February 2012.

The next day, Monday 20th February 2012, the Choir of Chavagnes International College will, God willing, be singing for Mass in the same Basilica at 6pm.  This is a great honour for us.

The Choir plans to sing the Kyrie, Sanctus and Agnus Dei as well as the Introit, Offertory, Communion and a Marian Antophon. All works will be from the repertoire of English renaissance polyphony, including works by by William Byrd, Robert Parsons and Christopher Tye.

The Mass features in a special Lenten pilgrimage organised for members of the Choir. Other planned activities in Rome include participation in a weekend scout camp with Roman scouts, a programme of cultural visits and attendance at the Papal Mass for Ash Wednesday.

This year the Choir will be working on the theme of the English Renaissance and we intend to record a CD of religious and secular works from this era to celebrate the College's 10th birthday in summer 2012. We are in the early stages of planning a Choir Tour to the UK for late July, with concerts featuring some of the same repertoire. We will keep you posted. In the meantime if you will be in Rome in February at the time of the Consistory, or know someone who will be, please do come and join us at Mass at Santa Maria Maggiore on 20th February, 6pm, and invite your friends.

Cambridge success for Maths Olympian

Congratulations to Paul de Guibert (15) who has just been offered a place to read Mathematics at the University of Cambridge (Churchill College). He has taken the option for deferred entry in 2013.

Paul who joined us when he was 12, has previously obtained Gold Medals in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Maths Challenges organised by the the UK Mathematics Trust and was also awarded this month a Distinction in the First Round of the British Mathematical Olympiad. He is pictured in the middle here (photo of our summer play last June, Much Ado About Nothing) with Fellow Senior Maths Challenge medallist, Maximilian Micallef Eynaud (left) who is studying for GCSEs this year and their English teacher, Mr Charles Tyldesley (right).

Paul is studying A levels in Further Maths and Physics, with AS-levels in English Literature, German and Spanish. Last year he completed Religious Studies AS and Maths A-level. It is early days to decide on a career, but Paul says he would perhaps like to teach or to work in industry. His friend Max hopes to begin A-levels in Maths and Physics next year and is thinking about a career in aviation.

Shakespeare Week Festival 2012
Here is some advance notice of our cultural activities for our annual week honouring England's national poet. This will be our fourth Shakespeare Week at Chavagnes, and this year we will be concentrating on two main themes: Shakespeare's world and influences and also a sideways glance at French classical theatre.

There will be competitions, films, classes and other events all week from 19th - 23rd March 2012, with two events open to the public.

Wednesday 21st March, 6pm: Shakespeare Supper, with recitations. (please reserve if you are planning to attend)

Friday 23rd March, 6.30pm: Junior play: Molire's Tartuffe (en Franais, bien sr; abridged) followed by a Buffet Dinner (please reserve if you are planning to attend the Buffet Dinner).

Passion Play

Tuesday 3rd April : another date for your diary

12.20pm: Sung Mass, with English Polyphony from Choir.

1pm: Light Lunch, open to guests (please reserve if you are planning to attend)
3pm: Passion Play based on the medieval English mystery play cycles.

This will be our second Passion Play (the last was four years ago, pictued left). It promises to be a powerfully moving occasion and an excellent preparation for Easter. Parents and friends are warmly invited to join us for this prayerful event.

Thanks for your continuing support and prayers. Especially in this, our tenth year, we will be grateful for any material or spiritual support you can offer us.

Chavagnes is work of faith: a place where teachers and pupils strive together to create a place where the Holy Spirit can inspire young minds to a life of service. Our pupils today will be the Catholic leaders of tomorrow. Already some of
our first alumni are active in industry, the Law, teaching and the religious life. A prayer or a gift for Chavagnes is important because it is an investment in the future of the Church in Europe. It is also a way for you to participate in our apostolate and feel a real part of our spiritual and cultural adventure. We keep in touch with our friends and benefactors and remember them frequently in our Collegiate prayers.

Please consider if you can make an extra gesture of support for us in 2012. Every little helps: priest friends who offer Mass for us, grandparents who offer a daily decade of the rosary for our intentions, those whose personal financial sacrifices help us get through the difficult days at the end of each month ... If you can help us with donation at this time, whether large or small, please do not hesitate to contact us. If you are a UK tax payer, you could send us a cheque made payable to the Cardinal Allen Trust, with a word indicating that we may apply Gift Aid to your donation.
If you are a French tax payer, we can send you a tax receipt for 'Impt sur les Revenus'. Cheques should be addressed to "Collge International". All donations can be sent to the address at the bottom of this email.

You can also make a donation online by visiting http://www.chavagnes.org/help/donate.shtml

Sincerely,

P.S.  If you are not too far from Chavagnes on Wednesday 25th January, 7pm, we cordially invite you to mark with us the annual birthday celebration of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns. There will, as always, be haggis, poetry, song and live Scottish pipe music. If you'd like to come, just let us know a few days in advance.
