New Board Chair We're excited to have Todd Patrick as the new chair of SBRI's Board of Trustees. He brings a wealth of knowledge in business development and partnering, as well as diagnostic and vaccine development specifically targeting infectious diseases. And, he's putting that knowledge to great use, moderating a panel of influenza experts at SBRI on Nov. 5. |

Stimulus Funds
With nearly $4 million in federal stimulus money, SBRI scientists are extending their research in a variety of areas including malaria vaccine development, liver immunology and candidiasis. And, one of SBRI's 11 stimulus grants, made as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), creates the opportunity for high school students to take part in a BioQuest Academy after-school program (pictured).

Cuyamaca Pilot Study Individual
donor funding for proof-of-concept
studies, which enable SBRI
scientists to test new ideas, are key to leveraging and winning bigger grants. Recently,
long-time SBRI malaria supporter Geoff Clark, through his Cuyamaca Foundation,
funded a novel study to test a new system which could lead to vaccine production outside of the
mosquito. Support from the
Cuyamaca Foundation enabled SBRI Principal Investigator Dr. Stefan Kappe to take a bold step toward a method
which will be of serious interest to a major funder who shares our interest in eliminating malaria. |
Meeting of the Minds Two fall events brought more than 100 leaders together at SBRI to join forces around global health. Association of Independent Research Institutes (AIRI) Annual Conference Independent research institutes must be nimble and entrepreneurial to succeed in a constantly changing and competitive environment. Nearly 40 presidents of America's premier independent research institutes gathered at SBRI in October to discuss topics ranging from infrastructure to strategic planning. SBRI president Ken Stuart co-organized the event.
The meeting preceded the annual conference of the Association of Independent Research Institutes (AIRI), a nationwide association of 91 independent, not-for-profit research institutes. Read the related press release.
Double Trouble: Co-infections Symposium Did you know there are estimated to be over one million people worldwide who have TB and HIV co-infection? To address the co-infection challenge, scientists from all over the world teamed up at SBRI earlier this month to generate collaboration across research fields. The symposium focused on HIV co-infection with TB, malaria and fungi, and looked at co-infection rates in both the developed and developing world.
