The Golf Hall of Fame was created, and is administered, by the BC Golf House Society. The Golf Hall of Fame of BC and the BC Golf Museum are located in the restored original clubhouse of the University Golf Club, on the grounds of UBC at 10th Avenue and Blanca Street in Vancouver. The building, constructed in 1929 was designed in the style of a British India cottage and houses the Museum collection, histories of BC’s greatest golfers and golf courses past and present across the province. It is independently funded, relying on financial support from the golf and business community in BC.

For further information please contact Barrie McWha, Executive Director of the BC Golf House.

The Roof Project

In earlier editions of this newsletter I referenced the need to replace the cedar shakes on the roof on the Golf House. Well, once again the golf community has responded. Through sales of the book “Just Call Me Mac”, written by Golf House Historian Mike Riste, together with some significant donations from many sources, we have been able to commit to having the west facing section of the roof done later this month. Mike Riste has very graciously donated all the proceeds (he personally paid for all the publishing costs) from the book sales to the “Roof Fund” and so the money from everyone who purchased a book, together with donations from friends of the Golf House like Norm Edgar, Dr. Sandy Cairns, Ken Woods, Golf Journalists Association of Canada, Don Griffiths, Doug Carrick, Dan Hixon, the Northwest Golf Writers Association, Dann Konkin have helped us get to the point where we can proceed with replacing the shakes on the front section. There are still 2 sections left so the fundraising will continue.

Canadian Hickory Championships

Last month I attended the Canadian Hickory Championship, held annually at The Legends Golf Club in Sherwood Park, a suburb of Edmonton. Over 70 competitors teed it up for three days playing a variety of formats. Players came from as far away as Texas, Nebraska, Iowa, California, and of course BC and Alberta. The actual championship took place on the last day and Ben Plaunt from Edmonton won with a score of one under par for 27 holes......some very good golf was played! Of course, there was also some not very good golf played as well, however it was great fun and was capped off by a great steak bbq during which former BC Golf professional Bill Carrington, a long time fixture on the Alberta golf scene was honoured as The Legends inductee for 2011. It was a great event and one that I highly recommend. Not only that but the golf course was wonderful, whether you were playing with hickory clubs, or ‘moderns’........I encourage you to visit the web site at http://www.thelegends.ca

A group shot of the competitors.....note the plus fours, all part of the atmosphere........everyone played with hickory shafted clubs that were of 1930 or earlier vintage.

A display of only part of the collection of vintage golf cars that Ron Lyons, a noted golf collector and the owner of The Legends Golf Course has found and purchased and restored. He has 18 so far and is still adding to the collection. Ron and some friends spent an entire afternoon at the Golf House researching old golf magazines for information. Many of the advertisements on the walls came from ads found in the magazines on display at the Golf House.

BC Golf House is at the Canadian Open

Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club and Golf Canada did an excellent job of staging the Canadian Open this year. The weather was perfect and then improved! The golf course was wonderful and personally, I think Shaughnessy is a great course for spectators where you can easily see several holes from one of 4 or 5 vantage points. ........and of course having Adam Hadwin from Abbottsford challenge for the title right to the end was a perfect script (almost). The BC Golf House and its many volunteers assisted in the Golf Canada tent taking photos of those that wanted their picture with the Canadian Open trophy, or in the case of some, with the Seagram Gold Cup........he one that Pat Fletcher won in 1954 at Point Grey G&CC. we all know that pat was the last Canadian to win the Open but did you know that he was also the first Canadian to win it in 40 years......since Karl Keffer won in 1914, Pat was the only Canadian to win in almost 100 years......we need one of our young guns to fix that ! We are pulling for you Adam!

Pat Tate, Pat Fletcher’s daughter, with her two grandsons, Marcus and Daniel. The boys have a firm grip on the Seagram Gold Cup that their great grandfather won in 1954. It was on display at the Golf House during Open week!
