Volunteer Reading
Need motivation to practice your VO skills? Volunteer. Many current and former Voice One students are readers for the visually impaired. They report that not only do their skills improve, they feel good about giving back to the community.
Lighthouse For The Blind needs skilled volunteers to read newspapers and periodicals. Through their Access to Information Services
(AIS) department, they maintain a reading service that allows the blind
and visually impaired to access much of the information
typically inaccessible to people with low vision. From time to time they pay actors to record and edit projects. So you could earn a little while improving your skills plus help
the community at the same time.
Recording For The Blind & Dyslexic needs volunteers to read educational books. Although their mission is similar to Lighthouse, their aim is to provide people with printed word disabilities
the books they need to learn and succeed in life.
LibriVox.org seeks volunteers with home recording capabilities to record chapters of books in the public domain. These audio files are published on the Internet. The ultimate goal of LibriVox is to record all books in the public domain. Good news for audio book enthusiasts: they'll be needing volunteers for a long, long time.
It's sometimes difficult making time to practice. By volunteering, we cement our commitment to practice.
