Depot Inn & Suites Kirksville Regional Air Show Returns
The Depot Inn & Suites is proud to enter its second year as title sponsor of the Depot Inn & Suites Kirksville Regional Air Show, happening September 11 and 12, 2010 just minutes north of La Plata!

This year, we are honored to welcome A-10 East Demonstration Team of the United States Air Force Air Combat Command as the headlining performers. Other performances and features will surely make for a memorable weekend of family fun!
The show will also serve as a welcome party for Cape Air, which won the USDOT Essential Air Service contract for Kirksville Regional Airport and is set to begin service on September 17. Cape Air will take over operation of the St. Louis-Kirksville route currently served by Air Choice One. Cape Air will improve service levels to Kirksville, offering three daily round-trips and allowing passengers to book their trip as an American Airlines codeshare. The Depot Inn & Suites provides complimentary shuttle service to and from all flights at Kirksville Regional Airport. For more information, see Cape Air's web site.

The following comes from La Plata community booster Dennis Hendren: The Run Through the Jungle on September 4, 2010 consists of a 5K race, 1.2 mile walk, and a tot trot. They will also be entered in the main door prize drawing consisting of over $600 in cash and prizes held after the walk and run. All registered participants are entered in the door prize drawing, but must be present to win.

ATCS Monitoring Now Available in Depot Inn Lobby

At the Depot Inn & Suites, you can start watching the trains before you even check in to you room! We recently added two new television monitors to our lobby, one showing the live camera feed overlooking the nearby tracks (with dispatcher audio), the other showing the ATCS (centralized dispatching) monitor of all trains in the area. As a reminder, you can enjoy several web cam views of the BNSF Railway in La Plata at www.RailCams.com.

Grant, Volunteer Effort Further Enhance Silver Rails Country Structures
Earlier this summer, Missouri DOT released $3,000 in station improvement funds for the La Plata Amtrak Station. Contractor Reed Stites made quick work of restoring the station exterior paint to what we believe to be its original Santa Fe colors, a sand color. Below you can see Reed at work, and the beautiful results.

This summer, we were also graced with the volunteer efforts of the Possibility Alliance, a local intentional community, to repaint the front of the historic Silver Rails Gallery building. Their work not only makes the gallery more attractive, but continues the work to make central La Plata a lively, vital, attractive destination. Also notable is that the Possibility Alliance planted roots near La Plata due to the proximity to Amtrak service!

Operation Lifesaver, Law Enforcement Raise Rail Safety Awareness in La Plata

July saw the dog days of outdoor summer activity. But to ensure La Plata residents would stay safe and stay alive to enjoy their summer, the national rail safety group Operation Lifesaver teamed up with BNSF Railway, Missouri DOT, and the La Plata Police Department to educate road users crossing the BNSF tracks in town about safe behavior in crossing railroad tracks. In three hours, over 100 flyers were distributed. As Amtrak Station Caretaker Bob Cox demonstrates with these photos, it's not always just motorists who need to hear this important safety message!
