Volunteers, Amtrak Herald La Plata Station Improvements

The experience for Amtrak passengers boarding and detraining the Southwest Chief at the historic Santa Fe depot in La Plata is getting better by the day. Station caretaker Bob Cox recently painted a new yellow safety stripe along the platform edge, and arranged for the installation of a new flagpole. Through his work with the non-profit Friends for La Plata Preservation, Bob has also been instrumental in increasing maintenance and upkeep of the station building, as well as improved landscaping around the parking lot. Under Bob's supervision, the Depot Inn & Suites was able to install equipment to provide complimentary wireless Internet access to all Amtrak passengers and visitors at the La Plata station, making it one of the very few Amtrak stations in the country to feature free wi-fi for all passengers.
Meanwhile, Amtrak plans to begin construction soon on $90,000 of accessibility improvements to the La Plata station, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Work includes "new wheelchair lift and enclosure...; new pad for lift and
sidewalk to platform; new sidewalk and curb cut from parking to
platform; new accessible parking stalls." Additional platform and signage improvements are also possible. Want to follow station developments as they happen? Be sure to keep your eyes on our exclusive La Plata Station RailCams!

BNSF Builds for the Future, Starting in La Plata

Economic conditions may mean fewer trains plying America's Class I railroads, but the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, which runs through La Plata, is not resting on its laurels. Shown above is a BNSF tie gang hard at work refurbishing the Transcontinental Main Line through La Plata. These refurbishments are a demonstration of BNSF's commitment to prepare for the economic rebound that's sure to come.
Be sure to stay tuned to the La Plata RailCams, where you can monitor BNSF's progress over the next week. The RailCams are just a sampling of the
entertainment options that are available for overnight and daytime

Our Motto: No Fees, No Gimmicks
As Wall Street Journal travel reporter Scott McCartney noted in a recent column, "many hotels are raising fees and hitting customers with more [mandatory] surcharges that don't show up next to room rates." Many of these surcharges are for amenities a guest might assume are free (or not even use), such as the swimming pool. And as business travelers know all too well, hotels commonly charge extra for wireless Internet access, a feature that, for many, is as essential as a clean bed.
At the Depot Inn & Suites, we pride ourselves on offering every guest the amenities that matter most, included right in our nightly room rates. Our guests will continue to enjoy free parking, free wi-fi access, free continental breakfast, free 24-hour coffee bar, two free drinks at the Daily Manager's Reception, free access to our indoor heated swimming pool (plus billiards, games, BBQ, and other recreational activities), free seasonal trackless train rides, free golf cart rental for accessing the area around the hotel grounds, and free transportation to/from local transportation hubs (including the La Plata Amtrak Station, Kirksville Regional Airport, and Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Kirksville).
We're committed to no fees, no gimmicks, just great value in every stay!
Thank you as always for your interest, and we wish you and your family a safe, happy, and healthy Independence Day weekend. We'll see you in La Plata!
