Soapy Seafood: ‘As the Ocean Churns’

The massive devastation from the BP oil spill in the Gulf will be felt for countless generations to come, but the immediate effect only underscores the inevitable. Wild, regional seafood is quickly becoming a distant memory, being replaced by farm-raised, frozen fillets and shellfish shipped half way around the world. The fact is deep sea denizens are logging more points than a mile high club member. And less than 1% of all imported foods are inspected by the FDA according to published statistics.

So what we noticed on our latest catch affirmed something really fishy is going on.

We’ve witnessed a high gloss sheen on the surface of our seafood, kinda’ like those waxed apples. As we let the water ran over our shrimp, you would’ve thought they were getting a bubble bath welcome. Come to find out that they were treated with STPP or sodium tripolyphosphate, an additive that keeps delicate morsels from drying out. Low and behold, STPP is a suspected neurotoxicant that can have caustic effects on the nervous system. Not to mention, it tastes really nasty if you don’t wash it off thoroughly. Who knew? Under current regulations, certain approved food additives don’t require disclosure. Just like most bagged salad and chicken are rinsed in a chlorine bleach bath, but you probably already knew that – or did you?

The message from our sponsor… Think before you bite…before it bites you. You just never know what might be lurking under the sparkling surface.

Cherries for Your Pain

Beauty, good taste and tempting allure with a fresh reputation to boot. What else do these crimson cherry beauties bring to the table? One less excuse for ‘I’ve got a headache.” Cherries in varieties that include sweet, tart, Rainier and Bing carry anthocyanins, natural pigments responsible for the red, purple and blue colors of many fruits and vegetables that act as pain relievers similar to aspirin. Anthocyanins help to inflammation and may help to reduce pain associated with arthritis, gout and even headaches. Just 20 cherries have been found to naturally offer as much pain relief as a single aspirin. Not to mention, they can help you sleep more soundly. Lucky for us, cherries are in high season right now so grab a bowl, clean ‘em good, and watch for the pits and stains.

Creepy Crawlers: Salmonella Hvittingfoss, a rare form of the pathogen linked to the recent Subway outbreak

Subway Salmonella

An outbreak across central Illinois has left Subway eaters with a sinking case of Salmonella. Over 78 reported cases of a rare strain of the pathogen were reportedly tied to fresh produce, according to a state official. Bad timing, as the company is actively promoting its new breakfasts. Will it sit well with sandwich lovers or send them searching for an ‘eat fresh’ alternative? We’ll keep you posted on the updates.
