Winter Reading Club | |
Through February 14
"Warm Up with a Good Book" during the Hancock County Public Library's winter reading club for adults, teens, and children. Or use a computer at the information desk.
Every time you log a book online, a computer automatically enters your name in weekly prize drawings for restaurant gift cards AND in final drawings for a Kindle Fire eBook reader or a $100 Visa gift card.
Two grand prizes will be awarded to people in each category(children, family, teens, adults).

Make this Valentine's Day an occasion to remember. Attend to a free workshop with "Your Gourmet Girlfriends."
Get ideas for valentine gifts from the kitchen (including candies easy enough for children to make), templates for handmade cards, and how-to tips for a perfect romantic dinner for two. The evening includes taste testing with hands-on crafts and a complementary booklet full of instructions for fun projects at home.
"Your Gourmet Girlfriends" is a personal chef service that serves Indianapolis and surrounding areas.

Indianapolis Opera Ensemble | |

tenor Jon Jurgens, and mezzo Davia Bandy are
young artists who tour Central Indiana, giving
audiences an up-close opera experience.

Indianapolis Opera Ensemble offers a showcase of arias, Broadway standards, duets and scenes sung by up-and-coming young opera stars that are sure to delight. Providing an in-depth look at the music, the singers also share insights about characters and plotlines. Artists will be available for a meet-and-greet after the show. This free performance is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Hancock County Public Library.

BROWN BAG BOOK DISCUSSION:

Claire Mercer critiques Chocolate, Chocolate: The True Story of Two Sisters, Tons of Treats, and the Little Chocolate Shop that Could, by Frances and Ginger Park.
Hear about the life story of two sisters, daughters of Korean immigrants, who grew up to become writers and opened a luxurious chocolate boutique a few blocks from the White House. A Booklist review says their true account resembles a novel with eccentric customers and corrupt contractors who will make readers laugh out loud on almost every page.
The Park sisters, authors of several books, have been interviewed on National Public Radio, Good Morning America, CNN and the Diane Rehm Show.
Participants are not required to read the featured selection in advance.
WOMEN'S BOOK DISCUSSION
Thurs., Feb. 16, 6-8 PM, New Palestine
Register online. In the novel, Dr. Marina Singh, a research scientist with a Minnesota pharmaceutical company, is sent to Brazil to track down her former mentor, Dr. Annick Swenson, who seems to have all but disappeared in the Amazon while working on a drug that makes women fertile into their seventies. Not only does no one know where Dr. Swenson is; but the last person who was sent to find her, Marina's research partner Anders Eckman, died before he could complete his mission.
You are encouraged to read the selection in advance. To get a copy of the book, request an inter-library loan at 462-5141, ext. 240. Books are due on the date determined by the lending library. | Two Yoga Series, Two Levels | |
5 Saturdays, Feb. 18-Mar. 17

- $25 fee for the entire series paid at the first session.
- Adults 60+ get free admission.
EXPERIENCED (adults of all ages familiar with yoga techniques), 1-2 PM. Register online.
BEGINNER (for adults of all ages who have never attended a yoga class), 2-2:45 PM. Register online.
Susan Goodart is a certified personal trainer/fitness counselor.
Yoga increases strength, stamina, and flexibility and has been credited with improving mental health. Those attending may use a chair or the floor depending on their abilities. Bring a mat or towel and a small pillow, and wear loose-fitting clothes.
People with health issues should speak to their physicians before beginning any exercise.

6:30-8:30 PM in the Greenfield youth program rm.
Get hooked on crafting and conversation at the "Knit One, Crochet Too" circle, open to congenial people of all skill levels. Beginning and experienced crafters bring their own supplies and give and take advice on each other's work during this library-sponsored program.

| Basic Computer Classes | |
These free classes in the Greenfield computer lab offer basic instruction.
Before taking these classes, if you are uncomfortable using a computer and mouse, please "Book a Librarian" at the information desk in Greenfield or call 462-5141, ext. 240.
For more advanced classes, take free computer tutorials by clicking the online resources tab on the library's website. Click the "Computer Tutorials" link.
COMPUTERS 101
For adults who are unfamiliar with computers, the library offers an introductory class. Learn computing terms and basics during this session. Turn on a computer, open, close and move from one window to another. Then work on essential skills, such as keyboarding and using a mouse.
START A FAMILY TREE: GENEALOGY 101
Create a legacy with family tree software. Reference Librarian Diana Hoy and library volunteer Beverly Bancroft will show amateur genealogists how to organize photos and piles of documents using Personal Ancestry File, free software, and Family Tree Maker, commercial software. Participants must have basic computer skills.
EXCEL BASICS
Create computer spreadsheets that can make tasks more efficient at work and help track money and investments at home. This class covers the absolute basics for getting started.
INTERNET SEARCH
Make the most of Internet search engines by learning how they work. Try out several popular systems designed to find information online.

Greenfield Local History & Genealogy Room
Ask questions of one of the area's foremost experts on the past. Joe Skvarenina, Hancock County's official historian, will be available for informal conversations on local history. No need to register--just drop by.
Skvarenina is the author and co-author of several books on area history and has amassed a considerable collection of artifacts housed at the library.
Upon request, Skvarenina will sign copies of his latest book about the Civil War in Hancock County. | |
