April 2009
Greetings!

Hello again from The Heights! I hope your winter went well. A lot has happened here at the school since our last issue; a successful winter sports season, additions to the staff, the auction, developments in our Alumni affairs, and much, much more. In the midst of all the excitement and the chaos nothing ever seems to stop alums from returning back to The Heights. As the alumni coordinator I am fortunate to witness this occurrence and the proud feeling that accompanies it; a reminder that the return of Alumni really exemplifies the strength of the connection one has with The Heights, and the corresponding, positive, impact this bond has. I invite all those who haven't visited in a while to visit and encourage those who have visited recently to continue to visit. I think you'll find that each trip will strengthen or reignite this unique bond that has helped form us into the men we are today. So, if you're unable to visit soon, and even if you are, I hope this newsletter can be an instrument in gaining a little insight on how The Heights' events, alumni, and community are doing and how this school continues to strive in connecting with students and impacting their lives for the greater good. Enjoy!
Alumni Announcements
 Alumni Committee
As of early November The Heights' Alumni Relations Committee is up and running regularly. The committee is meeting monthly and is actively reviewing, discussing, and proposing many relevant alumni issues and ideas. The committee includes President Jimmy Williams '89, Vice President Pat Kilner '97, Secretary Colin Gleason '99, Headmaster Alvaro De Vicente '83, Alumni Coordinator Jake Sellier '03, Athletic Director Brian Condon '89, C.F.O. Phil McGovern, and parents of alumni Kathy Reitz and Kevin O'Neill. Most recently we have planned special alumni activities for key years and have started to organize and update our entire alumni contact database.

Class Representatives
In one of our many attempts to update and organize our alumni contact database, as well as to increase alumni participation, we have decided to institute Class Representatives for each alumni class. Each graduated class has elected two gentlemen that will act as point of contacts for that class. As representatives they will aide us in relaying information, news, and events to the rest of their class. The class representatives for your specific class will be given to you in the near future.

The Heights Alumni Young Professional Club
The H.A.Y.P.C.  is a club, for Heights' alums, that gets together to talk about professional experiences, aspirations and advice. Our idea is to get together occasionally to talk, in a group, about what individual alums do, what they want to do, and what different professional experiences have taught them. The hope is that these talks will: help individuals in some of their professional decision making, create networking opportunities, and/or just give some interesting knowledge of specific work fields. If you are interested in learning more or joining this group please contact me or search for the group on Facebook. (The first meeting is tentatively set for April 22nd at 7pm at The Heights)
In Memoriam
The Heights community mourns the loss of an alum.
Kevin Michael Deiss, Class of 2004, passed away early in the morning on March, 15th 2009. The St. Thomas Moore statue, near the stone steps up to Chesterson Hall, is dedicated to Kevin and the memory of all deceased Heights' alumni. Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to Bill and Mary Deiss, and their children, Rusty, '88, Jimmy, '89, and Brian,'92, and Lori, Liz and Kate.

Basketball, Swimming, Wrestling

The Varsity Basketball team closed the season well with a 4th place finish out of 8 teams in the 62nd Annual St. Anselm's Tournament.  The Cavs opened the tournament with a win over the defending champion Takoma Academy Tigers 62-60 on the strength of senior point guard Mark Brown's half court buzzer beater.  Senior guard Jack Potthast was selected to The Gazette's All-Star Team and was the team's leading scorer (11 ppg; 84 threes on the year).  Senior center James Beatty was selected to three all-tournament teams over the course of the year (Flint Hill, Bullis, and Wootton).

The Varsity Swim team finished the season with a record of 9 wins and 2 losses.  The Aqua Cavaliers had key wins over The Potomac School and Sidwell Friends in addition to a season defining sweep at the 5 team Seton Invitational.  Led by seniors Jared Willard, Andrew Rowedder, Tim Vaughan, and Steven Mercer, the Heights brought a record two relay teams in addition to a few individual qualifiers to the Metro Championships.  The 4 by 100 freestyle relay consisting of Tim Finnell, Vince Falcone, Tim Vaughan, and Steven Mercer even made it to the championship finals.  All in all, a great season with plenty of talent looking forward to next season.

The Heights Wrestling Team completed its third season of existence by finishing 3rd of 8 teams in our league's championship tournament at Saint Anselm's Abbey School.  By way of comparison, in last year's championship (our first in the Mid-Atlantic Wrestling League) we  were the last place finisher.  This year, one of our wrestlers, Matt Roe, finished first in the 152 lb weight class, and several others placed second or third.  Our participation in the Saint Albans Invitational and the Maryland Independent School Wrestling Association's Championship proved that our team has plenty of room for improvement.
 The Heights' Auction

auction

This year's auction, "Cavalier Cowboys," was a wildly successful event.  Over 400 alumni, parents, faculty and friends came in their Western duds rearin' for a good time on the evening of February 7, 2009. The gym-turned-saloon was the venue.  A mechanical bull to test the rodeo skills of quite a few Cavalier cowboys (and their rodeo queens) proved to be one of the evening's highlights.  When all was roped and tied up, guests came away with some bargains and some one-of-a-kind treasures from the LIVE and silent auctions. Winnings included everything from Nats' tickets with "Presidential Club" treatment, to an "Awesome Potato Gun," complete with 10-pound bag of 'ammo,' donated by Facilities Manager Ned Burns and the men of his department.  This year's auction, chaired by Nancy Ryan (Jimmy '10), cleared a whopping $91,000 for the School.

Alumni Spotlight
The Heights would like to welcome Alumni, Chris Heeter '03 to our staff. Chris is now The Heights Athletic Trainer. He is also in charge of developing student strength and conditioning programs. Since being here, Chris has organized and added to our weight room, created work-out regimens and classes for 8th through 12th graders, and has also been the on-hand trainer during the J.V. and Varsity sports games.

Corey August '08, who now attends Catholic University, won a contest to design the mosaics of the main dome in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immmaculate Conception. He, and his architectect teammate, also won a $1,000 prize for the contest which was open to all Catholic University students.  August and his teamate were the only undergraduates in the contest. One day Corey hopes to design religious structurees in Italy. Congratulations, Corey!
Ideas and Suggestions
 Alumni Sports and Leagues
If anyone is interested in playing or fielding some alumni sports teams (basketball, soccer, lacrosse, baseball etc.) please let me know. We can try to allot some days or nights, maybe weekly (if in demand), to a specific sport. In the future, if we have a high alumni turn out for a given sport, perhaps we could create a league.

There has been an expressed interest for a Lacrosse and Basketball summer league.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, concerns, ideas or suggestions regarding alumni relations.
Again, we encourage you to stay active in The Heights' community by participating in various events, conversing with old friends, and by visiting the campus so you can see for yourself that the special aspects of The Heights, that you remember and loved, are still present today!

Sincerely,
