Eva's Student:
5th grade poet Vivien from 206K
I'm a dancer I could dance on the clouds or on the breeze I could dance on the sun and feel at ease I could be the wind dancing in the cold And I'll dance for sure when I am old.

Thank you!
Swing Poem
Swing In
The breezes of Dance
Stories told, past
Separating hearts
Joined back together
Shaking feet like fluffy
Clouds
In the sky
Doors
Of possibilities
Opening and
Closing
A twist of history

*NEW* Spotlight On Silvia Guerrero
1. How long have you been with Dancing Classrooms? What roles do you play? I was trained by Mr. Pierre in 2005 and I have been with Dancing Classrooms since then. I now serve in the role of Senior Teaching Artist.
2. Describe your best and most challenging experience.
There are so many great moments and there is so much joy in doing my job. I love the kid's energy, smile and appreciation. I am grateful to be a part of something so big and real. In general, the most challenging part for me is helping the adults realize that if there is a difficult class (with a challenging group) they are able to pull it off.
3. What did you do before you came to ABrT? I was teaching ballet in New Jersey.
4. Tell us about your life outside of ABrT. I am married to Louie and am the mother of a princess, AnaSofia. I love staying at home and I hate waking up in the morning. :( I also love going back home to my family every year. I love what I do for a living and enjoy watching tele-novelas.
5. Where are you from? How long ago and why did you move here?
I'm from Brazil. I've been living in the US since 1998. I decided to move to the united States after I completed a BA in Liberal Arts. I have lived happily ever after. |

*NEW* Calling All Samba Dancers |
Please see below for an extraordinary opportunity to study with Jomar Mesquita at Jacob's Pillow this summer. He is a master teacher, choreographer, director and historian with a dance company in Brazil specializing in dances where African culture meets Western culture: Samba, Swing, Tango. This intensive is for Samba only. Auditions will be held by video, although it is possible to be seen personally in February or March, as a JP representative will be in NYC during that time.
Please direct any questions you might have to Joanna Samu at the Pillow, (info. below).
Located in the beautiful Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts, The School at Jacob's Pillow is one of America's most prestigious dance training centers, operating alongside America's longest running international dance festival. During summer 2011, we are offering an exciting professional advancement program in Samba led by Jomar Mesquita, Artistic Director of Mimulus Dance Company from Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
The Samba Program will be an in-depth coaching and mentoring experience will take place from June 27-July 10, 2011.
We are seeking 24 advanced pre-professional and professional Samba dancers with ballroom dance skills (12 men and 12 women), age 16 and up. We are especially interested in newly established dance partners. Strong performance skills are required as dancers perform for the public July 2 and 9 as part of our free outdoor series, Inside/Out. The programs for these performances will feature each dancer's company or school affiliation.
Participants can expect to work in the studio with artist faculty 9am to 5pm, six days a week, accompanied by live music. Dancers will take morning technique classes with Jomar and distinguished guest artists in Samba no Pé and Samba de Salão or Samba de Gafieira. Afternoons will be spent studying special topics in Samba such as history, rhythm and folklore, followed by learning choreography and rehearsal. Attendance at all Festival events, including performances, talks, exhibits, master classes and studying in the Archives are part of this total immersion experience in dance. Our goal is for the dancers to return to their home dance community with deeper knowledge about their art form, and with an extra edge of confidence, polish and professionalism.
An all-inclusive program fee of $1,400 includes tuition, housing, meals, and attendance to Festival events. While the fee is most affordable thanks to our Pillow supporters, we will make an effort to help dancers requiring financial assistance to attend.
Dancers may also be eligible for special merit scholarships, including:
*The Lorna Strassler Award for Student Excellence at Jacob's Pillow. The award recipient must be an exceptional dancer, technically and artistically, with superior performance skills, a strong work ethic, and an inexhaustible commitment to the art of dance. This award provides a cash gift of $2,500 and a full scholarship.
*The Jacob's Pillow/American Dance Guild Erna Lindner-Gilbert Scholarship which provides a full scholarship specifically for a Samba Program participant.

*NEW* Testimonial/Feedback in DC's Impact
When DC has schools fill out residency evaluations one the questions asked is: "We rely on your feedback. Kindly provide us a testimonial (we can share with others) that describes the impact Dancing Classrooms has had on your students, school and community."
Here are some of those comments from the Fall 2010 Evaluations.
Always a positive, confidence building experience for students that teaches respect for each other, as well as respect for the process of creating in the arts -- A truly memory-building experience with high values and expectations that students latch on to. -98Q
Dancing classrooms takes reluctant and awkward students and slowly transforms them in to motivated sophisticated young ladies and gentleman. All of our students loved the comradery and exercise. Together our class was willing to dance even off the stage! They became more comfortable with themselves and each other. Being a part of the final competition really took our kids to a new level of teamwork. We saw them become a family supporting and nurturing each other. Students suddenly were willing to spend their own time practicing and helping each other. For all our students ballroom was a new, exciting and encouraging activity. -206M
Our students can be challenging, however the integration of dance, teamwork and elegance, enhanced their social interactions as evidenced during the culminating event. I thank Dancing Classrooms for their professionalism and expertise. Most certainly our students have been greatly influenced by this extraordinary experience. Thank you -224X
P.S.69Q has become a veteran in the Dancing Classrooms program. Students, teachers and parents have become accustomed to participating in the residency. The program allows for children and adults to enjoy the art of dance as well as building self confidence and teamwork. Everyone is always sad when it ends, but we are all left with dances we can teach others as well. -69Q
