The Thrill of Hope!

First of all, our Dancing Classrooms team sincerely wishes you and your family a wonderful holiday season.  At this time of year non-profit organizations ask their friends to make a tax-deductible contribution to support the organization. Dancing Classrooms is important to our kids and we know the program is important to you.   Please consider an end-of-the-year gift to Dancing Classrooms.  You can make that contribution through our website or mail us a check:  Dancing Classrooms, 25 West 31st Street, 4th Floor, NY, NY 10001.  We appreciate your support.

Our Dancing Classroom family is growing! 2010-2011 is under way and we're anticipating 78 schools for the Winter semester. That's only a portion of the 200+ schools we will be visiting this year. We're making a difference each day, transforming children, their families and communities all over New York City and beyond! Extend your hand---there's someone to take it.  We're creating safe learning environ-ments where children experience the joy of team work and the chance to see life in a positive and respectful way. So join us! We're delighted to continue partnerships with long-standing schools and we extend a hearty welcome to our new partner schools.
Annual Gala Benefit Dinner Dance, February 15, to celebrate transition year and a bit of dance history!
Pierre Dulaine and Yvonne Marceau's  Pierre and Yvonne
35 year partnership honored

This year has been an evolutionary year for
Dancing Classrooms, having completed  the transition from a performing arts company to a quality social development program for children. Our glorious past is rooted in the long time partnership of  Pierre and Yvonne, and the support of staunch friends like Madeline and Ian Hooper, Our promising future blooms through the committment of the young: Glen and Maria deVries and the children whose lives will be transformed through the work of DC.  Join us as we honor them all and pass the baton officially on to the next generation.
Update

Dancing Classrooms  News!

  • Our National Network continues to grow. In 2009-2010 we served 50,000 children in 525 schools in 17 US cities/areas and 2 international cities. In 2010-2011 the program is slated to begin in Phoenix, Seattle, Houston, Zurich (Switzerland) and Stamford (CT).
  • What do students do once they've finished DC in their school? Why they join our Dancing Classrooms Academy of course!  Classes continue in full swing with 14 classes each weekend totaling 550 children. Stop by any time and see a class in action.  The children would love to see you!
  • Our fall courses are finishing and that means it's time for the Fall round of Team Matches in mid December.  Come cheer for your favorite school now as they move through the rounds, dancing towards the GRAND FINAL at the Winter Garden, June 25, 2011.  Only 3 schools will be selected from the Fall. Check the website for dates and locations. There's a whole lot of shakin' goin on!

Research

Improving academic averages

A recent study of the Dancing Classrooms program sponsored by our Pittsburgh Dancing Classrooms site (Mercy Behavioral Health) demonstrates that the 5th grade students who participated in the Dancing Classrooms program had significantly improved grade point averages after three grade quarters of observation.  The grades were also improved for students participating in Dancing Classrooms when compared with the 5th grade students who did not participate for the subjects Social Science, Science and Math. Led by Dr. Janice Pringle from the University of Pittsburgh, the study examined 330 5th grade students in 6 schools.  The full report will be available in January 2011.

As dance supporters, we understand the benefits, physical, emotional and academic, dance offers students. Educators are now beginning to come on board. "The idea of integrating the arts, including dance, into the broader curriculum is not new, but it appears to be gaining a stronger foothold in public schools...." Education Week tells the full story.

Dancing Classrooms Comments/Reflections

First Hand Experiences

From 5th graders:

"I thought that boys were germy, but hey I'm still alive right now."

"I'm amazed that it only took 2 lessons [because] when I learned how to walk it took a week and a half.  You are awesome!"

"Dancing is a way to release emotion and energy in a form of elegance and uniformity with people."

From 8th graders:

"Most of the people who went on that trip (to the studio) I have never spoken to or interacted with in my life so it was great getting to know new people and having unexpected dance partners."

"Probably when I hold my girlfriend's hand again, I will always keep her on the right. I would open doors for her and pull out seat and "escort" her home and to her belongings when needed. These dance lessons make me a little more 'suave.'"
