Council unanimously approves $37,500 grant for Springfield Service Corporation

City Council unanimously approved an economic development incentive grant for Springfield Service Corporation for up to $37,500 during its November 15 meeting. The vote continues the City's trend of providing incentives to help businesses create jobs, grow, and succeed. During the next three years, the Illinois-based company plans to hire 75 new employees at an average salary of about $28,000 per year. The loan will be paid over a five-year period once Springfield Service fills 50 new jobs.

The next regularly scheduled City Council meeting is Tuesday, December 6, at 5:30 pm in the Council Chamber of the Melvin Municipal Office Buidling, 300 W. Washington St. The newly elected City Council and mayor will be sworn in during the meeting. To view past meetings, visit City Council's video archive page.

  • Public Safety Training Facility at 1510 North Church St.

Monetary donations must be sent directly to Christ Wesleyan Church, 2400 S. Holden Rd., Greensboro, NC, 27407. Please indicate in the memo section of the check "Operation Yuletide." The church will provide receipts for cash donations, which are tax-deductible, and 100 percent of the donations go toward Operation Yuletide. US Capitol Tree in Greensboro on Thanksgiving Day

Residents can sign the banner accompanying US Capitol tree en route to Washington, DC

 tree signing

The US Capitol Christmas tree is making a stop in Greensboro on Thanksgiving Day. The tree, en route to Washington, DC from the Stanislaus National Forest in California, will be on display on Davie Street, adjacent to the Piedmont Winterfest Ice Rink, from 1-5:30 pm. The 61-feet-tall, 118 year-old Sierra White Fir will arrive via police escort and will be accompanied by federal officials and members of the US Forestry Service. The tree is traveling to the Capitol, on a flatbed trailer with a custom-made enclosure that protects the trees branches, keeps it watered, and allows visitors to see it and touch it.

Greensboro residents are invited to have their picture taken with the tree and to sign banners that are accompanying the caravan on its journey to the Capitol. Learn more about the tree

Volunteers Needed for Annual Shoppers' Day

Volunteers to bring Christmas spirit to persons with disabilities

The Greensboro Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities holds its annual Shoppers' Day on Thursday, December 1, from 8:30 am to 12 noon at Four Seasons Town Centre. Volunteers are needed to accompany shoppers, serve refreshments, and provide support for more than 200 individuals expected to participate.

Volunteers host shoppers with different abilities from area high schools and organizations throughout Guilford County, along with local residents. Shoppers' Day allows volunteers to gain valuable insight from persons with disabilities, while teaching the importance of empathy, acceptance and compassion. Volunteers also become aware of barriers that people with disabilities face on a daily basis and gain a heightened sense of awareness of the diverse population's everyday obstructions.

The event features entertainment, primarily by people with disabilities, throughout the morning. For more information or to volunteer for the Greensboro Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities or Shoppers' Day, contact Donna Gray at 373-2723 or visit Greensboro Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabililties website.
