Thomas Berry Award Nomination Deadline is October 25

Nominations for the Greensboro Public Library Thomas Berry Award are being accepted until October 25. The award recognizes an individual or organization that has demonstrated a sustained effort to implement environmental programs based on the life and writings of Greensboro native Thomas Berry. The award, presented by the Kathleen Clay Edwards Branch, honors the legacy of one of Greensboro's most influential authors. To make a nomination, e-mail Steve Sumerford.

  

Help Greensboro Fire Department Win $10,000 Help the Greensboro Fire Department win a $10,000 grant by participating in an online survey hosted by Liberty Mutual Insurance. Now through October 31, go to www.BeFireSmart.com to take a 10-question fire safety quiz and earn credit for the City. Ten fire departments across the nation with the most completed quiz credits will earn $10,000 courtesy of Liberty Mutual. Participants who answer the questions correctly can pledge that they are "fire smart," which earns a credit for their local fire department. Grants to fire departments are awarded based on the size of the communities they serve.

Volunteer Coaches Needed for Youth Basketball League

Warnersville Center is seeking volunteer coaches for its Youth Basketball League, which is open to boys and girls ages 5-16. Team categories include ages 7 and under, 10 and under, 13 and under, and 16 and under. Practices begin in November, and games start the first week of January and conclude in March. Volunteer coaches must be able to teach the fundamentals of basketball and are subject to a criminal background check. For more information, contact Mel Melton at 373-5871.

Council approves $80,000 grant to assist business owners 

During its meeting on October 18, City Council approved a grant program to support entrepreneurs and small business owners in Greensboro. In partnership with the Community Foundation and the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce, the Greensboro Community Development Fund is an $80,000 loan pool open to businesses in low-income areas and minority or women business owners. The fund was established to assist business owners who cannot acquire funding through traditional lending institutions. Greensboro Beautiful Taking Orders for Holiday Greenery

Greenery sales support Citywide programs

Order fresh and fragrant holiday greenery from Greensboro Beautiful and the proceeds will support community tree plantings, litter cleanups, public gardens, and citywide landscape projects. All wreaths are made from Fraser Firs from the mountains of North Carolina. White pine roping is also available in 25-yard bundles. Discounts apply for orders placed by November 7.

For an additional gift of $20, a wreath and red bow will be donated and delivered to a local Mobile Meals recipient.

 

Greenery can be picked up on Thursday, December 1, from 8 am to 5 pm, at the Greensboro Farmers' Curb Market, at 501 Yanceyville St. Order online at www.GreensboroBeautiful.org. For more information, call 373-2199.

 

Pottery Demonstration and Trunk Show at Greensboro Historical Museum

          

Local potter demonstrates North Carolina craft

    

OwensVisit the Greensboro Historical Museum for a pottery demonstration and trunk show on Saturday, November 5, from 12 noon to 3 pm. Admission is free.

 

Travis Owens of Jugtown Pottery in Seagrove will demonstrate and explain the craftsmanship and technique that has been passed down through generations of Seagrove area potters. He will use North Carolina clay and a potter's wheel modeled after those used centuries ago.

 

The trunk show features limited edition and signed pieces. Other pieces from Jugtown Pottery are also shown in the Joanne and Arthur Bluethenthal Collection on display at the museum.
