Cultural Center Offers Beginning West African Dance Lessons
The Cultural Center offers beginning West African dance classes from Friday, September 17, to Friday, September 30, at 6:45-7:45 pm. Sunday classes are 4 pm-5:15 pm. Participants will also learn about West African culture, music, and song. Fees are $35 for four classes or $70 for eight classes. Individual classes are $12. For more information, call 336-373-2712.
Greensboro Shines Bright in City's Website Photo Contest
The new City of Greensboro website is now online and thanks to a photo contest, the star of the new site will be the city itself. Winning photos depicting images from around Greensboro, along with the photographer's name, will be the first visuals to greet visitors when they log on to the site's home page.
The winning photos, found online in the banner at the top of the City's website, were selected from nearly 600 entries representing six different categories. Winners of the contest are J. Stephen Catlett for landmark, Patrick Eilers for both recreation and beauty, Don Heermans for downtown, Doug Purnell for history, and Doug Swanson for skyline. The winners were recognized during the August 1 City Council meeting.
City's Collection Division Moves to New Location
The City of Greensboro's Collections Division and Privilege License office has moved to a new location in the Melvin Municipal Office Building. Residents can now access those services via the main entrance of the building, at 300 W. Washington St., or by taking the elevator to the upper ground (UG) level. Residents can continue to pay water bills and parking tickets at the new cashier window, while those seeking privilege licenses can visit the new office location. Memorial Concert Pays Tribute to 9-11 Anniversary
Three Triad performing art groups and five area churches will present Memorial Concert: A Commemoration of September 11, 2001. The concert marks the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the US. This special choral tribute is 5 pm Sunday, September 11, at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 1225 Chestnut Drive, High Point. Tickets may be purchased at the door for $10. Seating is limited. The concert features a chorus of more than 200 voices and a 45-piece orchestra. The program includes "Requiem" by Gabriel Fauré, conducted by Dr. Jonathan Brotherton of the Choral Society of Greensboro, and "Memorial" by René Clausen, conducted by David Pegg of the High Point Community Chorus. City Council agenda includes City website photo winners, approving mangement of Farmers' Curb Market and other business.
At its meeting on August 1, Greensboro City Council formally recognized the five winners of the City's website photo contest. Full details about the winning photos and photographers are included in the left column.
In other action, Council voted to approve Greensboro Farmers' Market Inc. as the manager of the Famers' Curb Market. Council also approved the purchase of the former IRS building at 320 Federal Pl. The General Services Administration awarded the building to the City in July, at the cost of $1.
City Council's next regularly scheduled meeting is Monday, August 16, at 5:30 pm in the Council Chamber of the Melvin Municipal Office Building, 300 W. Washington St.

| Firefighters Commemorate 9-11 with Stair Climbing Event | |
Residents invited to participate in special event
The Greensboro Fire Department is commemorating the anniversary of September 11, 2001, by inviting residents to participate in a stair climb on September 10 at the Bellemeade St. Parking Deck, 220 N. Greene St. The fire department is seeking at least 343 registrants, in honor of the 343 New York firefighters who died during the collapse of the World Trade Center, to do 13 laps up-and-down the stairs at the parking deck. Registration is free, but donations will be accepted. Participants must be 16 years of age or older. Participants who register prior to August 22 will receive a commemorative "challenge coin" designed by the Greensboro Fire Department in honor of 911. All donations will be presented to local nonprofit groups in Greensboro. Residents can find more information online at www.greensborostairclimb.com. |

New updated website goes live
A city's website is often its most important communications tool. Effective sites provide information on how government works, what services and programs it provides, and how residents can best be serviced by its various departments.
To better communicate all that to Greensboro residents, the City has redesigned and updated its website to be more informative, user-friendly, attractive and intuitive. The new site is now online. Run 4 the Downtown Greenway Race/Walk Event |
Support the local greenway on September 10
Join walkers and runners on Saturday, September 10, for the Run 4 the Downtown Greenway race/walk event. The event will raise awareness about the Downtown Greenway, fundraise for the Greenway Maintenance Endowment Fund, and provide a fun filled evening for the entire family. On-site registration and runner check-in begins at 3:30 pm. The one mile walk/run begins at 5:15 pm. The 8k run begins at 5:45 pm.
