Council approves use of new Internet filter at Central Library

At its October 19 meeting, Greensboro City Council approved the use of Internet filtering software that derails those attempting to access adult-themed content in certain computer zones in the Central Library. The software filters the material from computers in the children's area and at all wireless access points, while children 17 and under will have their Internet access filtered when they log onto any of the computers in the library system.

Research conducted by the library from August 19 through September 19, indicated that out of nearly 59 million Web hits traced during the timeframe, .07 percent were pornographic in nature. While the new filter does not guarantee access to offensive material will be blocked 100 percent of the time, library officials say it does add an extra layer of security. In addition, the library's Internet management efforts continue to include the use of a bandwidth-shaping program on all library computers.
