| Greensboro City Council Action Wrap-Up |
Council votes to move public comment period back to the beginning of meetings.
At its meeting on Tuesday, February 16, Greensboro City Council voted to move the speakers from the floor back to the beginning of its meetings. This is a reversal of a decision made by Mayor Bill Knight at Council's January 19 meeting, when he eliminated that section from the beginning, allowing time for speakers at the end of meetings.
Council decided to reevaluate the issue after residents expressed concern that their comments wouldn't be heard.
Council also:
- Decided to appeal a judge's decision to reverse the City's annexation of three neighborhoods---Laurel Park, Whitehurst Village at Millstream and Hartwood at Millstream.
- Approved a $15.4 million contract to J.M. Thompson Co. for the construction of Greensboro Transit Authority's new Maintenance Operations Transit Facility and Administrative Offices. The facility, located at 223 W. Meadowview Rd., is being built to meet the growing needs of the City's bus operations.
- Postponed hearing rezoning requests for property located at 2602 McConnell Rd. until April 16 and property located at 2404 Liberty Rd. until March 16. Residents have filed a protest petition for the property on Liberty Road.

| Why Google Should Choose Greensboro? |
City holds public meeting on why Google should choose Greensboro as testing site for new service.
The City of Greensboro is holding a public meeting to get your input on why Greensboro should be chosen as a testing site for Google's ultra-high speed broadband network. The meeting will be held at 6 pm Wednesday, February 24, in Council Chambers of the Melvin Municipal Office Building, 300 W. Washington St.
City staff wants your opinions on why Greensboro needs Google, why Google needs Greensboro, what it will mean for the city to have Google here, and what makes Greensboro unique.
Google is planning to test its ultra-high speed broadband network in a small number of cities across the country. If selected, Google will offer service that is more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have to Greensboro residents at a competitive price. |
| City Launches Security Pilot Project at Downtown Parking Decks |
Project aims to increase public's sense of safety and security at decks.
In an effort to increase a sense of security for users of two popular downtown parking decks and decrease the number of false 9-1-1 calls to police, the City of Greensboro has launched a new security pilot project.
The project puts company police officers at the Greene Street and Davie Street parking decks and a mobile officer who will patrol both decks in a vehicle. These officers, who will be working in conjunction with the Greensboro Police Department (GPD), are fully certified law enforcement officials and they have the same arrest authorities as police. They will patrol the decks during evening hours, Thursday through Saturday, to help decrease incidences of loitering, disorderly conduct and prank 9-1-1 calls that occur after regular business hours.
The Greene Street and Davie Street parking decks were chosen for the pilot because they receive the most traffic during these times. Read more. |
