City Council Action Wrap-Up
Council approves funding alternative for aquatic center.
At its meeting Tuesday, December 15, City Council approved borrowing up to $7 million in additional funding for the aquatic center project at the Greensboro Coliseum. The additional funds would be paid for with a portion of the countywide room occupancy tax, which is designated for City capital projects.

The total cost to construct the center is about $17 million. The large majority of it will be funded with a $12 million voter-approved bond, $1.4 million of which has already been used for the center's design.

Guilford County Commissioners must also vote to approve the use of the hotel-motel taxes for this purpose. The vote is expected in early January.

If approved, construction of the center is expected to start following the ACC basketball tournament being held at the Coliseum.

New State Law Requires Carbon Monoxide Detectors in Rental Properties
Law goes into effect January 1.
Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. It's odorless, colorless and tasteless, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 400 people in the US die from carbon monoxide poisoning each year.

Because of the dangers of this toxic gas, beginning January 1, 2010, a new state law will require carbon monoxide detectors to be installed in all existing rental units that use fossil fuel appliances or fossil fuel fired heating systems.

Specifically, the law requires that:

·         Owners of existing rental units shall provide at least one carbon monoxide detector on each level of each unit.

·         The detectors can be electrically hardwired or battery-operated.

·         All detectors must be approved by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.

Also, beginning January 1, 2011, all new homes being constructed must have a carbon monoxide detector installed outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedroom(s).

For more information about this new law, call the City of Greensboro's Engineering & Inspections Department at 336-373-2155.

Benjamin Branch Library Reopens in January
Upgraded facility features areas dedicated to teens and children.

The Benjamin Branch Library is scheduled to reopen January 2.

After closing for renovations more than a year ago, the
Benjamin Branch Library reopens January 7. The newly renovated facility features an updated and refreshed collection of books, periodicals and videos, as well as additional computer stations. It also features separate areas
dedicated to teens and children and a redesigned, more inviting meeting room with views to the outside.

These upgrades were made possible by a 2006 voter-approved library facilities bond. The $8.6 million bond was approved to enhance three Greensboro public libraries. The Benjamin branch is the first of those projects to be completed.

A grand opening celebration will be held at 2 pm on January 7 at the library, located at 1530 Benjamin Parkway. Stop by and check out the changes. Also, visit any of the City's library branches for books, videos, story times and much more!
